Eve-Online PVE Handbook v2 using MS Help (CHM)

I decided to create a PVE handbook using Eve-survival as a source.

Targets to be met:

* Offline copy of Mission Reports for times when original source is offline.
* Make it easier to browse with a Table of Content listing in the left pane.

* For Blitz runners moved all relevent info to top of the page and color coded to easier tank resist switch and what the main objectives are to finish mission.

The document type i decided to use is .chm which is the same format created by Microsoft to generate HELP documents. The same help files used in other programs when you press the F1 key.

This is what i created in 3 hours (most of the time was spent decided on document structure)

Start up basic info, only Mission Reports is selectable atm. However i do want to implement the other section if there is a demand for it. Initially i am going to implement only lvl4 missions since those are the ones i tend to do.

Partially implemented hyperlinks in Mission Report section :o

As you can see here only I have only been able to implement all lvl4 missions for subcategory A, also this is a perfect example of the cool indexing feature of the .chm. As you can imagine if you were to use this there will be no need to having to go back and forward. clicking on the mission in the left pane imediately opens it in the right pane as shown in the image below:

here are a few more examples:

http://imageshack.us/f/842/60580655.png/

http://imageshack.us/f/267/84646865.png/

in the last screen shot demonstrates the colour coding used to help blitz runners.

BLUE info = tank resists
RED info = damage to deal
GREEN info = blitz info (moved from bottom of the page to the top)

As always none of the info on EVE-Survival is mine nor do i take credit for it. Should i continue or just relegate it it to private use if anyone from the website complains but i do intend to complete it (as i said for private use).

here is the download link to the work ive done so far:

i just tested the document on another 2 PCs, a Win7 machine and WinXP and it worked on both.

the page renderer on windows machine is Internet Explorer.

for Linux there is an APP to view chm documents such as KCHMViewer.

remember CHM is a popular E-Book format. TBH theyve always worked for me and i dont know how it could break.

gonna update later tonight.

Personally, I'm not a fan of CHM format stuff, but it sounds like a nice project. I'll never end up using it because I have a fully functional mirror of Eve-Survival on my own webspace, but for people without a server to run a copy of eve-Survival on, this sounds like it would be very handy when the site is down.

Also not working. "Navigation to the webpage was cancelled."

Win7 x64, Home Premium. Since you mention IE, this is using IE-9.

"The Meta Game does not stop at the game. Ever."

Currently Retired / Semi-Casual (pending changes to RL concerns).

i did a google search for your error message, it seems IE explorer block .chm downloaded files by default, try this:

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/devdocs/thread/ef2b95e0-4198-4e1a-b876-314a23348b5e

follow Dave Sexton's reply, how ill mention em here:

1.
MAKE SURE THE .CHM FILE ISNT OPENED OVER A NETWORK!
must be on local drive, most common cause.

if the file isnt on a network drive, then:

2.
You also can't download .chm files from a web browser and simply click Open.
Download the .chm file to your computer first, right-mouse click it in Windows Explorer and select Properties.
Then click Unblock.

and if that doesnt work, try:

http://digitalpbk.com/windows-chm/chm-files-navigation-webpage-was-cancelled

sorry about no update was out over the weekend, will update soon.

ps: there are alot more webpages that show how to fix it, seems Microsoft secured windows 7 by default against .chm files for some reason, they need to be unblocked.

I know it's not completely related but it might be interesting to take a look at HTML5's offline capabilities in combination with (cache) manifest files
