Where's a good place to buy ISK?

With the CSM elections coming to a close and fanfest nearly upon us, it occurs to me that perhaps I ought to look into the local currency of our esteemed benefactors, CCP hf. The problem that I have, living in a non-major city in the United States, is that my local bank does not sell ISK. I certainly would not want to purchase ISK at the airport in Reykjavik, because I am under the impression that the USD to ISK conversion rate in the home country would be distorted; moreover, I am warned that often there is no way to sell your ISK back to USD once the event is done. I am not the only person with this question, so I am hoping that responses to this thread will assist other potential travelers.

Maybe you could spend the remaining ISK on one of them fine icelandic sweaters.

Cant you exchange it on the airport in your country before going? If not you could try to just pay with creditcard wich should exchange dollars to ISK.

Do you have a debit card from a bank that is in the Visa or MasterCard system? American express card? Can just use that. Exchange rates are generaly reasonable. Done that my self from Europe to India with no troubles.

It would be awesome if you could buy Eve isk when you get off the airplane in Iceland.

I went to Cancun (from USA) the first week of March. I used my Capital One MasterCard for almost all transactions, even bars and tips. The credit card bank charged no fee to me for this. Many hotels will change your country's currency to the new country's currency for free. The hotel I stayed at changed money for free at the current exchange rate.

Check with your bank if there's any fee for using your credit card abroad and what the exchange rate is like.

My Danish VISA card has no fees involved with a transaction in Iceland, and the exchange rate is very decent. And in Iceland, there's no places that doesn't take credit card. Even the pizza delivery boy takes credit card. In fact, they very much prefer that you use card.

When I went to Fanfest last year I just used my debit card for everything. Bank of America charged 1% on all transactions which in the end is a great deal. Everywhere I looked to change USD <=> ISK charged 3-5% per transaction. So if you don't spend all the ISK you're going to have to change it back to USD and take another hit on transaction costs. I had no problem using my debit card anywhere I went, even taxis take them. One thing you probably would want to do is notify your bank that you're going to be out of the country so they don't just deny the charges.
