"Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40 watt range"

"Hey, just what you see here"

"Uzi Nine Millimeter"

___

I like the idea mentioned above of using mega, gigawatts as descriptors for the different lasers. The different meta levels will still need differentiating, of course.

While we're at it can we fix the drop rate of named medium pulse lasers?

These names are terrible. Utterly terrible. I don't mean to be rude but you didn't realize the fundamental problem with laser names. I still have virtually no information on what any of these lasers does from reading the names: they're confusing as all hell and impart no useful information without my actually looking them up

Contrast this with, say, railguns: from the numbers in the large railgun names, I know at a glance the damage order: lowest number to highest number (dual 250's < 350s < 425s). At a glance, I know absolutely nothing about lasers unless I happen to hold a PhD in light physics. So for example you could have "1hz [flavor name] < 2.5GHz [flavor name] < 4MHz [flavor name]". It's been a long time since I did any physics so Hz probably isn't the unit you want in there (maybe watts?) but you get the idea. Scrap them, figure out some way to integrate a number into the name, and from there you can add "flavor". But you're wasting a valuable chance to get it right just fixing the "medium guns are actually small guns".

+1 to the idea of putting wattage into the name. Or something else numeric, like the number of lasing assemblies in the weapon.

Lower wattage for the beam lasers of course. (higher number of joules, but delivered over a longer time, can equal lower wattage. Double the energy, over 10 times the time = 5 times less wattage)

/Possibly/ you'd want to think about Lasers, Masers and Grasers. But I think that's more covered by the crystals involved.

The problem with wattage in lasers is the fact that it changes with the frequency (crystal) used. Though admittedly, going by pure physics the highest damage crystals should also get the highest DPS. Which is a no-go balance wise.

I admit if you suspend your disbelief in that regard, actual wattage could be used as a common naming convention.

If it had to be a measurement of energy, though, I'd go with joules per shot. Less for pulses with much higher RoF, more for conventional lasers.

Pulse:
Light Gatling Pulse Laser
Light Dual Pulse Laser
Light Focused Pulse Laser

Medium Dual Pulse Laser
Medium Focused Pulse Laser

Mega Dual Pulse Laser
Mega Focused Pulse Laser

I'm having trouble with the beam lasers because of the models. I can't seem to connect the model name with the power of the gun in the same manner as with the pulse lasers...

Beam:
Light Twin-Linked Beam Laser
Light Tachyon Beam Laser

Medium Quad-Linked Beam Laser
Medium Tachyon Beam Laser
Medium Twin-Linked Beam Laser

Mega Twin-Linked Beam Laser
Mega Tri-Linked Beam Laser
Mega Tachyon Beam Laser

I suggest swapping the models so we get quad-linked -> tri-linked -> twin-linked -> Tachyon .

Edit: inb4 dumbing down. Look at hybrid guns and their names

Edit 2: I think "insert amount here"-linked is awesome for anything with lasers and multiple barrels. For the one with one barrel, just insert an appropriate buzzword to make it awesome. Plasma-Charged, Focused, Over-Charged, Tachyon, Modulated, etc etc

while (CurrentSelectedTarget.Status == ShipStatus.Alive) {

     _myShip.FireAllGuns(CurrentSelectedTarget);

}

"Gatling" is most commonly identified as referring to high ROF. With this in mind, it makes the most sense when used in the Pulse category.

"Solid State" is inventing a new word, in a project whose goal is to reduce terminology.

+1 vote to easy numeric identfier for damage ranking of gun types, to fit in with Proj and Rails.

A bit of a problem is the lack of consistency in the models for the turrets.
There is only one turret that is gatling. I say that because of the spinning barrel.

We are also taught that more barrels = higher rof but lower dmg, but that goes out of the window with the beam lasers

     _myShip.FireAllGuns(CurrentSelectedTarget);

}

Perhaps it would be better to get away from the who relative naming scheme and go with something similar to the projectile and rail weapons.

For instance:

Small Pulse Lasers:
100 mW Light Pulse Laser (gatling pulse)
150 mW Light Pulse Laser (current medium pulse)

Medium Pulse Lasers
200 mW Medium Pulse Laser
250 mW Medium Pulse Laser (current heavy pulse)

etc.

+1 to wattage ratings.....
for simplicity sake;
75 watt small pulse laser/100 watt small pulse laser , 75 watt small beam laser/100 watt small beam laser etc. , etc.
You get the idea.

Change the icons for pulse lasers. They are so phallic they look like they were designed by the 13 year old son of someone at CCP.

Yeah I do think they need to be renamed and organized better. I look at lasers and then say to myself, "Maybe later!" It's honestly something that holds me back from getting into amarr. The minmitar and gallente have very easy to understand weapons. The bigger the number in front of the mm, the bigger the hit. Why does the small market group have medium guns listed under it for lasers? Can't you fix that? Especially since there is a medium laser section of the market.

This has simplicity written all over it...

Give lasers a megawatt, gigawatt, something-awatt power rating that increases logically.

Simple. Elegant. Effective.

Love it.

Also Gatling sucks. Don't use it, please.

Another Amarr player (not this char), and agree on

-> Removal of 'gatling' (if needed just change the one or two models so they don't spin)
-> Structured naming schema (size/caliber/meta/etc)
-> Numbers for caliber (even better, have them increase across the entire line of Small to Capital)

The current name types make me standardize fits on one gun type per size/type class, just for sanity's sake (or just sort by fitting stats in HQ Fitter). Your proposed schema does not help much in that regard.

Alternative: Specialized names like the Tachyon could also be used to retrofit the caliber names, instead of numbers. That way the 'Large Tach' folks can still have their cake but us small/med types get some as well. Lol

SMALL BEAM LASERS
Beam lasers SHOULD NOT hold the "Gatling" term (it's pulse lasers specific), please don't screw around trying to homogenize everything with the term "Gatling".
The original term is fine. See:

Dual Light Beam Laser I
Dual Modulated Light Energy Beam I

Light Beam Laser I
Light Modulated Energy Beam I

SMALL PULSE LASERS
Simple continuity from the beam version. "Gatling Light" inserted for improved clarity.
See:

Gatling Light Pulse Laser I
Gatling Modulated Light Pulse Energy Beam I

Dual Light Pulse Laser I
Dual Modulated Light Pulse Energy Beam I

Light Pulse Laser I
Light Modulated Pulse Energy Beam I

MEDIUM BEAM LASERS
Again, remove the term "Gatling" from the beam laser family. The quad laser is probably the most confounding due to its name. It just needs a small and simple touch. "Solid-state" is an ungraceful name, some better alternates are "Positron/Antiproton" (the reasoning for this is to aim for a loose association with the next level tachyon beams), but I'm in more favor just sticking in "Medium". There may be some initial confusion (with the current Medium Beam), however in the long run, it should work out fine. See:

Quad Medium Beam Laser I
Quad Modulated Medium Energy Beam I

Focused Medium Beam Laser I
Focused Modulated Medium Energy Beam I

Medium Beam Laser I
Medium Modulated Medium Energy Beam I

Edit: Striked the extraneous "Medium"

MEDIUM PULSE LASERS
Simple continuity from the beam version.

Focused Medium Pulse Laser I
Focused Modulated Medium Pulse Energy Beam I

Medium Pulse Laser I
Medium Modulated Pulse Energy Beam I

LARGE BEAM LASERS
There's nothing wrong with the current scheme. It should be preserved. When you omit "Dual", you screw the actual turret art.
"Heavy" inserted for improved clarity. See:

Dual Heavy Beam Laser I
Dual Modulated Heavy Energy Beam I

Mega Beam Laser I
Mega Modulated Heavy Energy Beam I

Tachyon Beam Laser I
Tachyon Modulated Heavy Beam Laser I

LARGE PULSE LASERS
Simple continuity from the beam version.

Dual Heavy Pulse Laser I
Dual Modulated Heavy Pulse Energy Beam I

Mega Pulse Laser I
Mega Modulated Heavy Pulse Energy Beam I

This makes sense, also having some kind of a number like mega or gigawatt or something would make life more pleasant.

I can confirm that 'Solid-State' sounds cool.

If you are definitely considering a naming system as suggested by the above posters, where bigger numbers are better, watts may not be a suitable name component for lasers. They're the unit used in powergrid, and it would be odd for, say, a 300MW laser to use 200MW of powergrid.

Some other physicsy units to look into may be the volt (V), ampere (A), ohm (Ω)*, lumen (lm), coulomb (C), lux (lx), weber (Wb), or tesla (T).
*FREAKIN' OMEGA SYMBOL FTW. AMARR VICTOR.

From there, the prefixes of M (mega), G (giga), T (tera), etc can be added.

I can only dream of a "500TΩ Tachyon Modulated Energy Beam I", though. I imagine the omega symbol would be a pain to search for in the market.

Many players would pronounce it as "500 Tera-Omega Tachyon Modulated Energy Beam I", which sounds EXCELLENT, however.

Hi everyone,

Also, please note that as the meta level 1-4 scheme is currently undergoing revision and redesign, the examples below do not take meta changes into account and therefore are not final.

Already said my piece on the lasers bit (wattage, joules, both work for me). But I wanted to revisit this. While I'm all for a naming scheme that makes sense, and identifies the meta levels, the one currently in-game is boring. Does this mean its not necessarily set in stone? That would awesome, just fyi.
