So,I have come to the conclusion ubuntu hates shaders. or at least my CPU hates me using shaders in ubuntu. Because not one oject shows up iin this game. only the lighting. My ship, the station, everything else, all invisible. all things considered, this isnt so bad because it was my first attempt at installing it. However, I'm wondering if anyone has the same issues, and if they can be solved, because the only thing attatching me to windows is this game.

For some minor clarification, part of the reason is i have an HP pavillion dv7 laptop, with no native dedicated GPU, only an integrated chipset. Albeit, its HD 3000 on an i7, but i dont think thats going to be enough. I'm using ubuntu 11.10, oneiric ocelot, 64 bit. I am also running wine 1.3.28. I have run vcrun2005, 2008, 2010, and d3dx9. I have graphics setting optimized to minimum, and station environment set to off. I've tried in a win7 environment, a winXP envorionment, and yes, even a vista environment because im desperate. so basically, all i want to know is, is there any hope for my poor eve client, or will i have to stick with stupid winblows? (in all of your opinions ofc)

Did you install DRI and force_enable_s3tc?

Probably that's the problem.

WHAT kind of integrated chipset? If that's an Intel one, the chances that the linux drivers provide enough shader support for the client to be usable, are rather thin.

Your best bet is any nVidia chipset. WIthout it, ATI can be reasonably good. Intel is mostly no go.

But seriously, it depends on the actual chipset.

Even if technically able to run the game, providing half-hardware, half-software SM3.0 support on their GMA chipset, Intel has no such "hybrid" support under Linux, where the drivers aren't supplying the features missing from the silicon, which are required to play.

There was an old dev blog with a nifty little utility (for windows, but afaik usable under WINE) to check the appropriate support for the game.

It's here: http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=882

sudo apt-get install driconf
sudo driconf
set force_enable_s3tc

try to run eve again.

Your graphics card should normally support SM 3 but I'm not sure if the drivers already support it properly. Anyway you can always try to install the latest drivers and try again.

despite this being an old, dead thread, i wanted to say that the driconf thing actually DID work to turn on the shaders, so for anyone who is having a similar issue, take that approach. FINALLY go this all working today. thank you sir (albeit a bit late)
