About Goons in OoC Chat

Hello everyone. I usually don't make out-of-character posts (I'm a roleplayer). But recent events have inspired me to rant.

I've been active in the roleplay community for the better part of a year now. I really enjoy it and have had fun with it so far, and probably will for the foreseeable future. There are some, however, who are not having quite as much fun in the RP community for various reasons.

One such person who has come to me personally is the player of Lyris Nairn of GoonSwarm. Lyris, as a Goon, has only recently begun RPing and chatting in the OoC channel. As a player though Lyris has been RPing for quite awhle actually, and IC Lyris was actually active in the community prior to being a Goon (and reportedly a well-liked character, to boot). So I find myself a bit baffled whenever there's this huge drama llama bubbling up in OoC chat whenever Lyris decides to speak.

Lyris seems very well-read and intelligent, so of course the conversations that come up in OoC chat tend to be of that same sort of nature. Tensions run high, and disagreements are formed. This is completely natural and expected whenever talking about things like real-life politics or philosophy or what-have-you. But why hold grudges?

Maybe I'm just stupidly tolerant and patient but whenever someone logs in and gives the usual "o/" in OoC, regardless of whether or not we had a heated discussion the previous night I greet them in a friendly manner. I'm not like "Oh it's you, that {insert ideology that I disagree with here}". Yes, Lyris has the ability to bombard a channel with a wall of text containing four or five syllable words. Should such lengthy and formal discussions be held in a separate channel? Perhaps, but that's not why I think people are angry. I think people perceive Lyris (and the Goons in general) as people who live and breathe trolling and tear consumption 23/7, and so for those people there's a level of distrust involved with any interaction with Goons. Perhaps you were podded one too many times by a Goon, or got ganked or something. Maybe you got frustrated in channel. But this does not justify prejuidice! There are plenty of other groups that do these sorts of things! Yeah, I was podded multiple times in Delve by a Goon named jm24. Do I hold a grudge? No! This is InternetSpaceships, and I was bested by superior tactics and/or numbers. I similarly ask of those who have grudges against Goons in general: do you hate PL, Wildly Inapropriate, or other groups that have frustrated you?

If you answered "yes" to any or all of those, then I question why you are playing a game as unforgiving as EVE Online.

I know this wasn't a very coherent post, and perhaps I'm missing what Lyris was trying to point out entirely. But please try to understand what I'm getting at: chill the hell out and recognize that this is a game, and in this game we will run into players of all ideologies and backgrounds. Holding prejuidices is completely pointless, especially if such prejuidices lead to an hour-long heated argument that results in more bitterness than changed minds or enlightenment.

As an additional aside, I do encourage you to check out the SA forums, particularly the "Debate and Discussion" area. Reading through it, you'll find that Goons aren't the trolls most think them to be (as trolling is in fact against their rules).

Peace.

Except I'm not raging against Goons, but rather I'm raging for their right to go about things undiscriminated simply because of their alliance ticker.

As far as i know goon pilots don't do things the way they do because they are goons... they are goons because they are pilots who already did the things they do in the first place. Its an alliance composed of special people.

And there is no OoC when you're using your avatar name. Except for me, since i'm a very boring person and my avatar name is the same as my real life name. So i can personally attack people and then say i was only acting In-Character.

The world is a community of idiots doing a series of things until it explodes and we all die.

Obviously goon propaganda, but i'll bite anyway.

I've met goons in many games, and have never been attacked or scammed by them, but i've seen how they operate, how delighted they are about causing people pain and misery, and witnessed large numbers of them actively trying to ruin games which have just been released, as well as more established games.

So it's not about me being a sore loser or anything like you suggested. I just plain don't like bullies and sociopaths.

Goons made this reputation for themselves. This isn't prejudice, it's precedence.

Goon reputations don't need defending, Rek, and if they did... they wouldn't need you to do it for them.

OP is disappointing.

They attempted no such thing. There was plenty of "This is pointless" and "RPers are bad", but there was no "We're terrible people because we're Goons".

For some reason I always think of that movie "The Goonies", when I think of Goons.
Do the Goons in Eve have a big disfigured guy named Sloth helping them?

Nope, just a couple thousand fat guys doing the truffle shuffle and eating chunky monkey ice cream.
