Laptop's Screen Brightness

I've had this problem for a little while now, and can't seem to get anywhere with it. I have an older Gateway T-6836 laptop, and just recently I am unable to adjust the screen brightness. Usually, the Fn + up / down arrow will brighten / dim the screen, but not any more.

I've tried updating graphics / chipset drivers, digging through windows updates, etc. and nothing seems to work. Not only can I not adjust it with the function keys, but all of the options in the control panel and Windows Mobility Center are missing as well. The screen's brightness is at 100% all the time... Where else could I look to change something?

Also, I don't know if this would cause the problem, but my battery seems to have gone bad as well. The power options in the taskbar says "Consider replacing your battery" when I hover over it.

Try going into the BIOS and see if you can find display setting there to adjust it. Also, have you checked to see if you have a stuck key on your keyboard related to brightness settings? Like the up arrow. It might be a failing display though anyway.

In cases like this, the only thing you can do is reinstall os and pray that reinstall will fix the problem.

You need to get an update for the program that handles that. All of them come with software that handles the fn keys, won't even notice it usually, the one for my dell is like Dell Quickset or some crap. I bet a recent windows update broke it.

If your battery is going bad you could try replacing it or take it out and run on wall only and see if you can change it, if you can't then I would venture a guess it's the above mentioned software issue.

Tbh, its not worth that much hassle. I've got quite a bit of stuff on there I'd have to go about downloading / reinstalling

That's what I originally thought. I've updated everything I could think of, but maybe I'm missing something entirely
