Overheating Problem on Vid Card

Couldn't figure out where else to put this, and I need some advice.

I live in a Hot Climate (Maui, Hawaii) and we don't have an AC Unit so I am kinda stuck running hot as it is, but I'd like some advice on ways to help reduce my Vid Cards temps (pushing 80c). I've taken it out and cleaned off the vanes so no dust build up. Case is wide open on both sides. But it still pushes 80c. It's an Nvidia GT430 and I do plan on replacing it in the near future but even so.. in the mean time I have to figure some way to keep the temps down on the card. Ambient temps in my home are usually between 85f and 90f and that is with all the windows and doors open, and every fan in the house running.

Pretty much at my wits end. So, advice, trolls and LOL's at my old vid card are welcome.

Silicon destabilizes at 135C if I recall and NVidia cards automatically shut down at about 120C.

Don't worry.

Things are only impossible until they are not.

The 80's isn't bad especially with your ambient temp. If the card has a fan on it then you might want to give MSI Afterburner a try and manually set the fan speed (or set your own temp/speed fan curve) to keep it even lower.

My SLI 560's stock like to hit 91C+ on one of em so I manually set it to ramp up and keep it below 81C Max.

Since you are using an open case, I would buy a fan (like those meant to sit on your desk), move it in close, and point it into your case toward the video card. It'll work. When I was young and between jobs long ago, I once avoided replacing a card fan that way until I had enough to just buy a new PC months later. lol...

I did this before with my old video card.. it does work. It was the only way I could get Starcraft II to run on it for longer than a couple minutes.

This is a common problem in your location.

All that volcanic dust acts like a thermal blanket. Just vacuum out your case and all will be well.

I have EVGA Precision running with the fan speed set to max it literally drops my temps 1c lol. Guess i'm gonna have to accept the current temps for now it looks like XD.

As for the desk fan ideas by another poster ... DOH I never even thought of that. *smacks head... twice* Ok lets see how this does LOL.

Thanks for the info though :-)

*edit* Andddddd.... After moving a stand fan so it blows air directly into the case, my temps dropped 12c I'm sitting fairly stable at 68c now.

Guess even with an open case there wasn't enough airflow. Now there is... and now... to EVE! Thanks for the information and advice. It's appreciated.

Set "Present Interval" to 1, 2 or 3. Confirm through the FPS monitor (Ctrl+F). Ideally, follow v-sync (60fps) or if its still too hot, drop to 30fps .. or even 20fps in the most extreme cases (very useful for older cards). EVE isn't an FPS, the framerate loss is cosmetics. The client/server responses still ticks at 1Hz regardless of framerate.

If your ambient room temp is too hot for fans to keep your PC cool, look into water cooling

Those PCI-slot cooler fans usually do more harm then good. Videocards now days are often 'contained' and have extremely good ventilation system. installing more fans etc just blocks air flow and doesnt help cool the card past what it's internal fan/housing already does

Rofl.. I had it set for interval Immediate.. my FPS was over 200. Dropped it down to Interval 1 (60fps - Vsync) and my temps dropped an additional 14c immediately. Down to 54c and stable now. I can live with that. Thanks for reminding me of the Interval option. I'd forgotten all about that as well.

Yo have you try to use CAPS on your FPS? Set the option inside eve call "present interval" use ctrl/f for frame... And play with this option this options allow to use your card not full loaded or half loaded or even use lower power for laptops or like u a overheat card. Ps if you clean your card the problem have been fixs as well.

I often run 4 clients, up to 6. It really works the video card.

I find that if you drop all the EVE settings to medium or disabled (like shadows, hdr, and antialiasing) it greatly reduces the load, and still doesn't look like Pong.

vsync is a beautiful thing

I hate it when people brag about getting 200fps =P its suuuuch a waste of processing power =p

Heh, yeah I just got a new monitor a cpl weeks ago ( Samsung SyncMaster SA300 1920 x 1080 ) that is larger than my old LCD with significantly better color and resolution. Now that I think about it, I switched interval to immediate when I got it and flipped the graphics quality to max to see how EVE looked on a decent monitor. Forgot to switch it back and.... well now I'm embarrassed. LOL. Roll

yeah, worst case use a small circular fan blowing into the side of the case,

but its a double edged sword in your location, open case = more dust and debris to gunk up the heatsync as well as the occasional stray coconut crab chewing up your wiring Shocked

LOL it's more likely to be one of the many Gecko's we have running around here. That's what did for my last Power Supply. Baby gecko somehow managed to crawl into the PS and became.. well... crispy.

As a fellow always-too-hot-for-hardware climate resident, I suggest a liquid cooling solution. Causes maintenance on the pc to be a little more of a pain in the ass, but if you invest in a good one you can forget about overheating problems.
