Rough profit calculation idea from trade activities

I've been thinking about how to calculate profit from trade. So far, there's no good app that takes your item's buy price and subtracts it from that item's sell price, taking into consideration fees and taxes. That would be ideal, but there are programming issues.

One method that I came up with is this: Add up your wallet balance, buy orders, and sell orders daily, and subtract it from the next day's sum of the same three.

What do you guys think might be wrong with this method?

It doesn't quite give you an item's buy/sell price, but gives you a rough idea of how much you've made/lost and includes taxes/fees. Also, the numbers variate depending on how much you change your market orders, so if an item loses value significantly, then it throws your calculation off.

If anything, it does seem to give you a decent NAV just on your market orders + wallet balance.

I've seen the sum of my wallet balance, buy orders, and sell orders increased by several hundred million according to this calculation over the period of about a month or so, which included items that took huge hits to their value.

A useful method to some degree? Thoughts?

I am interested in what you are writing here. You might be interested in checking out EVE Marketeer (or eve profit, but I've never undestood their calculation methods).

I think I will be adding complete NAV tracking this weekend. And depending on how this thread turns out, maybe more :)

Would hide nav tied up in contracts but over time that would smooth out I guess.

Other potential issue would be to ensure the char you're reporting on is trading and trading only - nav calcs as a means to assess trade profitability will be thrown out if you decide to do the odd mission or something.

True about missioning and other activities. I find that EVE Mentat is a great application that can filter out any category to give you a quick sum. So if you wanted to occasionally mission, you could use that application to find out your total sum from mission rewards/bonuses and back it out of your monthly totals.

something else to keep in mind is that this calculation fails to take into account player transfers.

if you are using this solely to track your own progress, shouldn't be an issue (unless u wired me 2bil while u were drunk last night or something).

however, as im discovering, when trying to use a similar method in combination with api tracking... it makes things a little more difficult.

my question is this, if you were to include player transfers, when/where would u add/subtract what kind of transfers from what totals?

You'd just be able to exclude all player transfers in the journal, I believe they've got their own category.

If you're trading a lot, doing the odd mission or so shouldn't make a dent in your profitability, the only thing that can seriously mess up your profits is if you buy stuff for yourself (since there is no way to differentiate those from default trades).

In this however, I do not think exact numbers are very important, a human is quite able to make a good estimate of his profitably from a simple graph or table, even if one of the days includes buying something big, at least they won't be surprised by the sudden loss of money.
