So I'm new to Eve. By new I mean I've been playing for a few months now. The kind of thing that kills me about Eve is trying to do these illusive missions. I'm a new guy, not that smart, so when I'm trying to figure out how to go 'interact' with beacons using the 'Device' I've been given its a little frustrating when there is no animation, message, or indicating effect that I've actually accomplished the interaction with the beacon.

So I'm trying to see if there is something further I need to do, and I actually read the description of the 'Device' in my cargo bay. It reads "This is a thing. It does stuff. " I gotta say, out of all the games that I've played I've never been so demotivated to touch missions ever again. The writers couldn't come up with one or two sentences to help indicate whats going on here? Really? I'm paying a subscription for this?

So sad.

Well, that "Device" is just an item. It's a tongue-in-cheek way of saying "This isn't an actual item or anything, it's just something for you to carry from one spot to another". It's humor.

And once you play Eve for a while, you'll realize that missions are a very very small part of Eve's gameplay. They're simply a means to an end, not a reason for playing the game in-and-of themselves. For a quick listing of all of the stuff there is to do in Eve, check out this page. You'll see how small a part of Eve those missions are (the missions you're talking about are the 'Standard' subset in the missions category on there, just one little square).

EVE is not a pve game. You will learn this very quickly. PVE is for when you've failed at pvp and are rebuilding your losses

There's a lot of strange items in the Eve Universe, some with very comical descriptions simply placed in game for amusement. Some items are just random loot drops with no specific use in game. A lot of the strange items are actually items that Cosmos Agents want you to acquire in order to complete their missions. If you happen to find a new strange item during your travels, it's a good idea to keep it. Chances are good that later on you'll find out that there actually is a use for it in-game.

As for the Beacons in space listed in your Overview, some are mini combat sites (Landmarks), others are gated combat sites (DED Complexes) and some just have 'Agents In Space' (Cosmos, Data Centers). Basically the Beacon listed in the Overview allows you to warp to them.

Bullshit.

CCP advertises Eve as a MMORPG with options to do all different kinds of things.

Please post proof stating that PvE is for when you've failed at PvP and are rebuilding your losses. There is no written law stating that a player can't just do missions if that's all they want to do. In fact, there's a lot of different PvE content in this game.

Nothing wrong with running missions. Or any of the other various PvE content in this game.

Guess you two forgot that this is 'Missions & Complexes' sub-forum.

in a first, really short, point of view, YES. EVE does have a lot of different ways to be played. but in the end, everything is a kind of pvp.

PvP doesn't mean destroying ships on the battlefield all the time. Often it'S kind of hidden behind other gamemechanics or softskills and player tactics.
Best example for that is the market in EVE.
You really have to fight, to sell your stuff for the price you want. Often you have to change it by 0.01 ISKs, or you have good contacts to a miningcorp which's selling their minerals cheaper to you then on the market.

Also PvE is a kind of PvP. Also without destroying the enemy ships. It's more about best speed to, the bigger the tick-payout, the bitter you are. so you can compare your ticks or the time you need for a specific mission (AE as often used example).

so you see, EVE is a pvp game

I guess it's all a matter of interpretation and your point of view.

When I'm doing NPC agent missions, I'm not competing with other players to see who completes the mission first.

Alright, here's an easy example. Titan Tracking that was just nerfed to the ground which has affected both titans and dreadnought. From a balance perspective, it's now near impossible for these cap weapons to hit even a battleship, NPC or not. What brought about this nerf/balance? PvP. Changes to PVE content come from either

a) Market PVP, IE nerfing drop rates/ moving lvl 5 missions to low sec to stop the proliferation of LP and devaluing of it compared to time spent.

b) Rebalancing population from High sec to low and null sec. This is because players almost need a big push to say "Oi wankers, go play the game, not sit there and watch your wallet tick all day"

c) Nerfs to isk generators, such as the sanctum nerf. This directly hurt nullsec alliances forcing them to not waste as many ships on human wave tactics and from being not just rich, but so SPACE RICH that it killed smaller alliances before they could form. Now we have incursions, which the devs so far haven't nerfed as they have an element of PVP, if you're running vanguards that is.

The game is an MMO, but it's an MMO where EVERYONE could be trying to kill you. As stated many times by CCP, it's a risk reward system, you're never totally safe. Welcome to EVE online. If you'll excuse me I believe a russian stealth bomber is attempting to pop my carrier.
