The Launcher seems to be a bit superfluous, CCP

From the launcher dev blog:
"All of this really just hides the primary goal of the Launcher; to overhaul the patching and update mechanism to allow us to deliver smaller updates, more often, reducing the burden and impact of major releases. With an easier deployment pipeline for us and a simpler update process for you, updates can be rolled out in much more granularity than is possible at present, allowing important fixes to propagate to the client in a much more timely fashion."

What a load of rubbish. It looks as if we are going back to the useless eye candy days of Incarna.

We need something practical, something that gets us into our 15 accounts as fast as possible. Roll

I'm sure that it was mentioned they wanted to move that way in the future. A launcher would be a good platform to do this from. When I'm not at work I'll try to find the link that stated that.

dunnhill, if you are having problems, post in the Issues forum: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=272 you will get a response ASAP as the launcher guys are monitoring that forum closely.

how is this simpler? it still closes the client each update. since installing this thing ive had 2 patches per client that teh launcher didnt do.

the launcher is half finished, it should be able to patch multi installs on the same pc from 1 launcher, i shouldnt need to run this thing 6 times. the import/export function is a pain, it used to be 1 tick box 'clear up downloaded data'.

multi client launcher yay

OMG when can i get a pic here

It is a stupid and pointless addition, the old client did what it did just fine. It's like CCP are desperately trying to add things in that they can do half-assed and with little effort, this actually makes it more difficult to get into EVE and unnecessarily so. Not only that this launcher looks almost exactly the same as the same designs that free to play MMORPGs have and has the same clunky about-to-break feel they all do.

Do any of you actually try using this software that everyone complains about? How can any of you think this was a good idea? The only thing I can understand is that you've been told to give us scripted responses if you can't think of anything nice to say about it yourself.

Why not just focus on make good features that actually genuinely improve the player experience like updating the Overview? That was a genuinely good idea putting in new icons etc. to make things a bit more easy to use. When I **** up my artwork I go and pester people on why it's so bad if I don't know why, then I go and fix it again and keep doing it until I know its right. You all act like you're in denial these days which is a shame because things were getting off to a good start.

Pro tip CCP: Don't fix what isn't broken! EVER!

"don't get us wrong, we don't want to screw new players, on the contrary. The core problem here is that tech 1 frigates and cruisers should be appealing enough to be viable platforms in both PvE and PvP."   - CCP Ytterbium

Efficiency......

Yes, it's very efficient to have a useless program taking up 64MB and CPU cycles while doing absolutely nothing, especially since it already accomplished it's task of launching the client.

Now, if it would close after client launch or maintain some usefulness beyond launching the client, perhaps it wouldn't be so bad. Perhaps access to the skill queue from this screen might add to it's usefulness?

As a matter of efficiency, it currently leaves much to be desired.....

Edit: Found the settings button. There are options to only use it when updates are deployed and to have it close after client start-up.

That's pretty typical though, change something and let the users figure it out....And how stupid is it to have it default to running all the time?

Like the idea but wow is this thing slow, for me at least. A patch this size normally only takes a couple minutes for me.Its going on 15 minutes and its still patching.Just thought id add my wine to the cheese party :)

I was going to put that in as well Stephen...unless the patch was hundreds of megabytes (which I don't think it was), it took an absolute eternity to patch ^^

Well done CCP!

I somehow managed to miss the massive complaints about the launcher when it was on sisi....

All I saw were a few technical issues (crashes, connecting to the wrong server, ...) - but I'm sure you'll point out to me where you argued against the concept of having a launcher as such.

I for my part like not having to start/restart the eve client for every single patch - that was quite annoying.

Why do you think all MMO's use a 'Launcher' ?

Its just better, and if you cant understand why its better, then thats OK, understanding is not required.

You again disabled your reading function and assume, as per usual, way to much without a solid foundation.

See it as this, the new launcher, what you have now, is the foundation, on this things will be build to make things go smoother and better in the future.

So the patcher took 40 minutes to patch the patches, then when the patching was patched the client update had to be installed.

I'm sure somebody at CCP Towers has got themselves a nice pay rise and few new acronyms to put on his CV, let's hope we don't have to pay the price for another prima donna programmer in the long run.

One of the things I like about Steam is that any game you have installed can (and does) do a regular cycle of micro updates on startup.

This is the future.

The days of knowing about a bug for months but not getting a patch because they were fixing a bunch of other stuff before releasing it is horse and buggy stuff.

If the new EVE launcher comes close to being like this I am all over it. The rest of you Luddites continue trying to stop progress and keep sitting at your CRT monitor trying to play on dial up.
