I mean, what's the point?

What does it accomplish beyond adding a few worthless social networking buttons?

I suppose it's fancy that there are links to account management and whatnot on it, but considering that for the most part these were already on the login screen, what's the point?

e: TL;DR - what advantages does this launcher have over the old system (apart from appearing more polished, and lagging up my computer)?

Apparently having to retort to fresh new installs when patching doesn't go your way, are going to be a thing of the past

I can't imagine that those are a widespread occurance, though.

I guess it was to give people one more thing to ***** about, so it worked!

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

No need to load (and reload (and reload)) the entire client just to apply patches.
Easier migration of patch data.
Better support for delta patches and for built-in recovery and repair of the client.
Allows for resumed downloads if your connection goes down.
Provides a solid foundation for future improvements such as custom install data paths.

I found one thing it's actually good for.

Multiple installs. I installed one of my multiple clients, copied it to another, then I tried running the launcher same time I played on one install.. and it worked fine! Earlier the game would never allow me to install stuff same time I played.

AFK-cloaking in a system near you.

Did you even bother reading this Dev Blog?

It's not a matter of conformity. It's a matter of efficiency. I for one hated having to start up the client, wait for it to load only to be told that I have to download a patch, then restart the client, wait again, then be told that I have to install another one, start over, then be asked once more to install another patch that my client somehow missed in the first two updates in the past 5-10 minutes.

In other words, it was rather inefficient with the update mechanic before today's new launcher.

Back when hilmar was buying league of legends characters while wearing 1000 dollar pants he noticed it and decided we needed it.

Also if there are no patches to be deployed if you have these settings in the launcher checked eve will work in its previous ways.

- Only display the launcher window when there is an update

- Close the EVE Launcher after starting EVE Online

I did, Mr. Aliastra alt man, however - regardless of what a few people from Iceland write - my opinion of this launcher is the same.

Efficiency......

Yes, it's very efficient to have a useless program taking up 64MB and CPU cycles while doing absolutely nothing, especially since it already accomplished it's task of launching the client.

Now, if it would close after client launch or maintain some usefulness beyond launching the client, perhaps it wouldn't be so bad. Perhaps access to the skill queue from this screen might add to it's usefulness?

As a matter of efficiency, it currently leaves much to be desired.....

Edit: Found the settings button. There are options to only use it when updates are deployed and to have it close after client start-up.

Don't ban me, bro!

From the dev blog
Quote:
You can chose to only show the Launcher if there is an update to the game.

Pretty sure it was mentioned in dev blog or patch notes that having it close on launching the client is a setting you can enable/disable. Or you could just do the above.

Edit: For those that can't find it

  1. Click the icon that's highlighted in this image
  2. Click Startup
  3. I'm sure you can workout the rest
