Try having the launcher in the foreground as it's patching. If that doesn't work try having only the launcher open as it's patching. One of those resolved it for me.

Mac user here, having same issue. When it goes to install the new launcher it locks up and stops responding. The process of patching causes my game to become unplayible and thus have to re install it every attempt. Lucky I had made a 2d copy of EVE , else I'd have to download it again all together.

Please tell me CCP is aware of this and is looking into it.

Hi!

The problem is, that your EVE folder path has characters in it, which are not in the English alphabet - thus not "normal" low range ASCII characters (<128). I guess you didnt't use the default path for the original EVE installation (I certanly didn't), and have set up a custom path in which you have used national characters. (In my case it was "D:\Játékok\EVE" - "Játékok" means "Games" in Hungarian).

This is an error that CPP will fix, but until that is done, this is what you can do, to run the game:

  1. Move your EVE folder to a path that has no national characters in it, only those that are in the English alphabet (example: "C:\EVE").
  2. Change your EVE shortcut path in your Desktop to point to your new EVE directory.
  3. Optional: delete you EVE local data folder, but this is not necessary.
  4. Start the game.
  5. The game will download the new patch again, and then the launcher will install as normal, without errors.

Side effects: since you have moved the game directory, all your EVE settings will be reseted to their default values!

Best regards,
Peter

The UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 30: ordinal not in range(128) error will be fixed by moving to a folder path that doesn't contain Cyrillic or similar style (non Ascii) characters. There's a fix incoming for that issue, once we're confident with the build, that will properly address this issue.

As to the ReaderError: 'utf8' codec can't decode byte #x8b: invalid start byte exception, I'm at a loss for the cause. The updater tries to connect to http://client.eveonline.com/patches/win_launcherinfoTQ_inc.txt and grab some values from the file, but apparently is getting garbage from it instead of valid data.

Are you able to open the file in a browser, manually?

I am not sure why I am getting that error. My client was installed in c:/games/eve. I have uninstalled and tried to reinstall now multiple times now in different locations and now the game wont even install correctly, its getting errors halfway through the install and tells me to use the repair tool, which then gives me the same error listed above. I am so close to just giving up :[

and yes, i can click on the link you provided in a browser and see it.

How about this:

1. Download the latest repair tool http://cdn1.eveonline.com/client_repair/345/repair.exe
2. Drop into the client folder
3. Run it

Make sure you don't have any other EVE related processes running in the background.

I am truely at my wits end with this whole thing. After 5-6 hours of trying to fix this issue i have finally managed to get the game to install again fully at C:\Eve. Now I try to launch it for the first time and this comes up....

It's not a fix, but whilst CCP are looking into it, this is one way to get into the game if you cannot currently due to launcher/patch issues...

I get the same thing as Lex Mossi.

Hope a solution turns out quickly, and without messing my setup.

I understand your need for a new launcher for the game. Still not sure why I need it. However...

There are three ways of doing this:

1. Design - implement - thoroughly test a new launcher/patch process. Make sacrifices to the god of code that nothing will go wrong and release the new process.
2. Run the two processes in parallel (if new process fails, revert to the old one and fix the aroused problem(s) until the old process can be abandoned).
3. Boss puts a gun on your head, and sais "Release it now! -- Fix bugs later. Stupid customers will wait for the fixes!" -Muahahaha (satanic laughter added for dramatic effect).

Nothing is perfectly made by humans that are prone to error, so most people that have the mental capacity to use a fork and a knife to consume their dinner would have taken the 2nd approach.

But the way this whole process is going, makes me (the customer) feel stupid.

Judge not lest ye be judged!

OK so after fully reformating, Installed Eve first thing before anything else and It worked just fine. IDK maybe the client screwed something up in my computer. It sucks that I had to completely reformat to get this game to work. :[

This worked:

1. Deleted the launcher folder.
2. Executed repair.exe -> downloaded launcher again
3. Launcher fired, no problems. Got in the game.
