I want to mission for gallente without destroying caldari standings.

I just joined RvB which is in Caldari space, but i have been missioning for minmatar and just recently able to do lvl 4 missions. My current Caldari standing i about -2.5, now I did a bit of research but wanted to confirm what i learned with people who know.

As long as I decline missions where I kill Caldari i won't take a Caldari standing hit.

Do I need to decline story missions for minmatar to in order to stop my Caldari stadnings falling to low?

How much will the diplomacy skill help me here?

I'm not interested in a high standing with Caldari I just don't want them shooting me pretty much.

You will take a hit on your caldari standings if you shoot at Amarr too.

To be safe, steer clear of all faction missions

Yes. http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Standing Look at the chart to see what the derived standings impact is. IIRC, you can run the SOE epic mission arc to bump a particular faction's standing with you.

You will lose standing with Caldari for doing storyline missions for Minmatar or Gallente with Gallente being the worse of the two. The Caldari really hate the Gallente.

Killing Caldari or Amarr will also drop your standing with the Caldari.

How low is too low?

You lose faction standing in two ways . . .

1) You lose standing by killing a factions ship/structure.

2) You lose standing by completing "faction missions" for opposing factions. BUT THIS IS CAPPED at some value based on the factions relative standing.
For example. You could complete an unlimited number of gallente factions missions and your Amarr standing would never drop below -3 and your caldari standing would never drop below -5.

So if you run missions and storylines for Gal & Min your Caldari and Amarr standing will still drop to -5, but no lower (assuming you never destroy a Caldari or Amar Ship/Structure)

If you add diplomacy 5, your modified standing will be exactly -2. You won't be able to use calari/Amarr agents higher than level 1 but you will be able to fly in their space safely.

When rvb was based in gallante space, I joined.my standings were so had, I had to train diplomacy to level 5. My gallante standing prior to diplomacy was about -8. With diplomacy, -4.63.

So if you are at -2.5, train up your diplomacy, reject any anti-caldari missions (heck, stick with anti-pirate missions) and you will be in the clear.

Thanks so much for the replies really cleared this up for me, one final question do i get attacked when my standing is on -5 or does it have to be lower?

You will be attacked by Faction Navy NPC's at -5.00 or lower standing.

if you want, you can do the starting noob caldari missions. this will get you about +2 or a bit higher standing. it takes a few hours in a frigate on the cost of other standing of course.
