Can't get certain probe scans to 100%.

Currently at L4 in Astrometrics and Astro Acquisition, L3 in Rangefinding and Pinpointing. I’m using Sisters Combat Probes and 2 gravity capacitor rigs. I have run across a couple of Mag scans that I can’t get higher than 62%, even after the probes are at the closest resolution and centered on the location.

Is this just an indication that the skills are not quite there yet? Wormholes and ships are no issue. I am planning on getting to 5’s on all, but wanted to see if there was another reason for the inability to get to 100%.

Thanks.

EDIT: Using 7 Probes in the X, Y, Z cross pattern

How many probed do you use?

Try using sisters core scanner probes rather than the combat ones, you can get those to 0.25AU whereas the combats only go to 0.5AU. Also a bonused ship helps (racial scanning frigate/covert ops/T3 with scanning subsystem). As a final note there are also a number of implants and hardwires which affect scanning.

Use core probes instead, they can "zoom in" one more time giving your probes increased strength.

Combat probes have a significantly reduced scan strength. The sisters combat probes have a strength of 22, which with all your multiples your likely rocking somewhere close to 40-50 sensor strength. Compare this to a regular core scanner with a base strength of 40 (or sisters of 44), with what your running you'll likly get a strength closer to 80-90... or just about double the strength you where having. At that level you'll likely pick up scan-sites you haven't before.

So yes... combat probes are used to find player ships.... NOT scansites.

I think it is your scanning technique, and the fact you are using combat probes which have lower scan strength than core probes.

I have really lousy skills:

* Astrometrics 2 (I can use 5 probes)
* Astrometric Rangefinding 2

I have no problems scanning anything using a T1 probe strength bonused frigate with two Gravity Capacitor I rigs, and standard Core probes. With similar skills, my alt scanned his way out of a C5 and back to hisec in an unbonused Orca with a Sisters launcher and Sisters Core probes (hole collapsed earlier than expected while we were closing it).

I tend to use 5 probes most of the time.

When I do find a tough to scan signature, I resort to a 4 probe tetrahedron layout with the target at the center. It is optimal for signal strength, but I find it awkward to always use for probing with. However, the fastest prober I know only uses a 4 probe tetrahedron, and keeps telling me to get used to it, as more probes can take longer to position.

Combat probes have exact same scan strength than Core probes - when using same range.

Core probes however have 0.25 AU range which combat probes don't have, and at that range they have double scan strength compared to 0.5 AU range. (Whenever you half the range, scan strength allways doubles.)

I usually have one "flower" that I first "explode" to cover everything in system and then cherry pick the goodies as the best sites usually have the weakest strength in preliminary scan and certain sites seem to group together.
Alternatively you can use a deep space probe and available comparison chart to sort out exits and stuff in WH's.

anyway official probing guide might also help.
