Questions about the Planetary Interaction system

So I am a returning newbie. Tried EVE a few times and never stuck around. Around 2.4 m SP currently. This time I am here to stay because nothing else is like EvE and Planetary Interaction looks fun.
I am currently combat skill speced but the PI area looks like fun.

Is this something that I could train as well as my combat skills or should I start an alt or second account to do the PI stuff? I was thinking this could/would be a nice way to gain ISK while out mission and PvP which is what I am doing now.

Also is the PI for more advance players or can someone new like me get into it early on and learn it or should I wait till I understand EVE more before I start playing with PI.

This seems as I have been reading about it most of the day at work (don't tell my boss) that I could setup small production setup and let it run. Just stop in and monitor it and move goods to the stations to sell. I could be wrong. Using the UniWiki and what I can find on the EvE forums.

Thanks and I hope this is a good place to put this question.

Yes, PI can be done by a combat player and it doesn't take a long time to train it (just a couple of days for all skills needed for basic production) and maybe a day or 2 for any racial industrial ship to ship the stuff from the planet to the station to be sold.
So basic PI can easily be done by starting players.

Just keep in mind, that because of this. Almost every single pilot in EVE has PI set up (some even with multiple alts) and also that Hi-sec planets don't offer a great deal of resources for PI when compared to null / WH planets. This means the profit margins on the common PI goods are not high.

PI is something you can get into for very little investment (ISK/time). As such, it also has little in the way of rewards (in high-sec, at least) except that, once you recoup your investment, you're looking at almost pure profit (with some consideration towards the time you spend fiddling with things and hauling it).

The beauty of it is that it's almost all completely passive income once things are set up. Even if you only make a little bit of ISK, it doesn't preclude you from doing other things (like missions, incursions, etc) at the same time.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. …"

Cool thank you both for the answers.

Sounds like I will be getting into it then. Not looking for a huge ISK pay out, just a stead ISK maker for the days I do not feel like running missions.

Also I like the sound of setting up my own little production lines (businesses) and see what I can do on the market. Again I am not looking to become rich, just extra ISK to play with.
