Where is the substance?

What is the point of a 'dev blog' if it is all marketing and no actual content? And then it points to another dev blog that it is literally pushing out of the way to show you?

Why not just put a splash screen on the front of eve with 'EVE IS RADICALLY CHANGING ... but we can't tell you anything'. It's the same net effect, other than reinforcing the opinion that eve is only about the Captains Quarters and NeX for you.

PS. what happened to our 'new interface that was almost ready'. Or that Gallente fix that is so badly needed? Where is anything regarding any iteration at all?

You kind of just did that, again...

You just made an announcement of an announcement, in a Dev Blog. Take a step back for a minute and think how silly that sounds.

We live in interesting times; in fact CCP is the kind of company that if things get hairy they instinctively stall for time. That, they certainly have done this week. First of we have the fallout over Incarna, an amazing example of company resource allocation gone wrong. A vision from years ago that has been re-purposed to serve as a prototype for CCP's other MMO project. It rolls out a midst massive controversy, in some cases larger than what has been seen before, this is the pinnacle of community insults. For all the hurf blurf and :promises: we should all stand proud, years from now this is what people will remember.

But CCP have done more, not only have they redefined their level of customer disconnect with Incarna but they have also defined what it really means to fail at communication, both internally a la resource allocation and externally a la CSM.

Naturally, they have caught the attention of the world. Only a few months ago they averted catastrophe over Monoclegate and now they have done it again by committing to their core purpose as a company by managing expectations.

Currently we are seeing _very predictable feedback_ on what we are doing. Having the perspective of having played this game for six years, I can tell you that this is one of the moments where we look at what CCP do and less of what they say. Common sense takes time to set in and the predictable reaction is always to resist change.

All that said, I couldn't be prouder of what we have accomplished as a community, knocking sense into Icelandic alpha males is hard and we are doing it as so many times before! Stay the course, we have done this many times before.

I am going to post my thoughts on this latest development soon. They're going to be super-exciting thoughts that I know you're all going to love.

Honestly I would have rather seen no blog at all than seen that.

It's not confidence inspiring when all you say is "We're doing stuff because you asked us to!". The complete lack of even the lightest shred of details removes any credibility from your claim, and if anything it looks like a last minute stall post.

Look CCP, I don't claim to be the bittervet many other posters are, with only a few months of EVE under my belt (and a previous trial experience 2 years ago) I don't really qualify as the most jaded EVE player in the world.

But even I'm not so blind to see how hollow that post was. Most of us were expecting a "Big Update" this week. If this is that post, then, welp.

CCP's new release schedule is fine. It's what they've been releasing (and not releasing) that has been the issue.

As a former CSM and follower of this sort of thing, I've seen the "We hear you!" line used but not evidenced in later action. I will say this though, the TONE and SCALE of "We hear you!" is new.

Over the past days and weeks, CCP has been doing extensive and intense introspection and revitalization. The result of this is a refocusing and reprioritization on a scale unheard of within our company.

That's new. It's long overdue (and always surprising it hasnt happened earlier each time i think about it) but if true and it's happening that's a very good sign.

I wont say I'm optimistic, but I WILL say I'm interested.

I'm pretty sure there can be a brilliant way to combine your prior visions of a future with great WiS elements and a new dawn to the old FiS and Spinning System. Just always ask yourself how would you like to experience the universe if you would be in space for real.

See your Ship approaching a large station, docking, a hughe hangar filled with ships and finally the experiience of being a small fly in a hughe station.

make everything just a smart adventure to expirience.

The solution always is a middle way of fixing, adding new things and making these new parts fitting perfectly within the already existing world. Smooth transition is the key. Constant change within the world. Enabling players to constantly change the world (sov) . The economist would say "stagnation is bad" as a player experience and as a process of development.

The funny thing is, it's so lofty we can't even see what it is.

Heck, at this point, I don't even think CCP knows what it is.

Care to give us a hint, guys? Please tell us it's not "keep them distracted until we can fix the CSM7 election and release DUST."

What the hell was the point of posting this vacuous dribble? I've seen Tea Party announcements with more intellectual basis.

Is there some sort of genetic defect in Icelandians that makes you allergic to Public Relations? Go hire some Americans to tell you how to post BS and make it look good.

While the basic message of this dev blog is a good thing, I am extremely worried by the lack of details that have been communicated to the CSM previously. It would seem to me that the only reason to leave them out is to change direction. We all want more time and energy on spaceships, but we *need* the critical game breaking issues resolved, not just a pile of new things.

I have to say it would be prudent to learn from past mistakes and not decide on the details of this new direction wtihout running it by the CSM first.

I don't doubt that you have the best intentions, but there "has" been a tendency in the past to get enthused about something you are sure the player base will be behind 100%... but after the original good idea has been kicked around internally for a while the final proposition ends up missing the mark completely.

Just sayin' (in a hopefully tactful way).

I think that most will be pretty happy with a more equitable distribution of dev resources between projects old and new, internal and external to EVE. Especially if the resources devoted to iteration come up with a really well thought out way to solve major issues we have been dealing with forever. New shiney's have their place, and so does actually making Incarna interesting... but little things like making FW or PI or mining or SOV warfare worthwhile, interesting, and FUN should be the main focus.

We know you have committments elsewhere, but here is hoping that the heavy lifting on those other projects is done (18 months) and this refocus can happen without kicking them in the teeth.
