I have a ton of respect for the Low Sec crew, but for something approaching "historical piracy", go to high sec for the nice shiny drops and blasting treasure boats as they AFK through the pipes. So, if that's the sort of piracy you're looking for, it's still very much alive and well.

Piracy certainly isn't like it was in Setec's day (Space Invaders as was).

Then again CCP must take the majority of the blame for that really - ganking for the loot/salvage is simpler than holding and ransoming now. That's one of the reasons low-sec is so dead, everyone expects a gategank and they are rarely disappointed.

Nor me (I go down with guns burned out P), but there ARE lots of people who'd rather pay a reasonable amount to save their shiny stuff.

Current game mechanics mean its not normal for that to happen. It USED to be (and in most cases it was honoured) but now its not.
