Hey CCP, this would be a cool feature and i don't think many people would disagree.. Now that you have changed the UI and the API backbone, why not implement a new camera mode that would fix it behind the ship, and move with it? Kind of like a third person camera. Granted, as long as it didn't take you time better spent fixing hybrids etc.

1: I totally disagree

2: I would state this again more strongly in caps if caps didn't annoy me this much

3: no

4: Just look at some videos of star wars the old MMO republic on how constrained and silly this feels.

erm... then don't use it?

You think that feels silly..

I think that issuing a command to warp somewhere and have the ship fly towards me giving me the rear view, not seeing where i'm going, feels silly.

Woah...Ciar Meara thats a lot of negitivity. I think as another optional camera view this would be a really good feature. I often find myself angling the camera to that position and it would be great if it would simply stay where its been put...

Surely camera drones should do as their masters command...no?

3: Yes you are

The OP obviously stated it would be an additional camera mod. Roll

IMO it would be awesome to have it..and really useful for manual piloting.

Also a 360 vertical camera would be nice.

I would like my fixed third person camera to be 5 degrees higher and zoomed out a little bit more than yours.

See where this is going?

Maybe be able to set a default camera position that is used when you reset camera.

In the current EVE crisis theres many things i´d want to see fixed before they looked at this, but once that was out the way i agree as long as its optional that a fixed forward facing third person camera would be pretty cool, maybe just adding a camera lock button so that you can lock the camera in a position you wanted e.g. forward facing. Actually, having adjustable camera position "bookmarks" under the advanced camera controls menu would be absolutely awesome for filming machinima.

Also a simple slider to adjust the speed at which the camera drone moves from one position to the next would be fantastic.

Would help me when i'm creating dozens and dozens of perfectly positioned bookmarks around a station or gate.. help people with their machinima.. etc. But IMO it would just make you feel like you're actually inside your ship, and not someone somewhere else looking at a stranger's ship.

Would be cool for those hours long freighter trips.

I see what you mean, but I find that I do feel like I'm my ship, I'm just getting a "readout" of the world around me from my electronics, so that I have situational awareness.

This is an old, old argument even wrt fps vs. third person, and also wrt 3rd person vs. cockpit flight in space sims.

But I've always thought 3rd person is far more immersive in most cases because of situational awareness. In real life you never stare fixedly in the direction you're going, but you're always looking around, and your ears give you a picture of what's behind you to some extent. It's that situational awareness that's mimicked by 3rd person. The only downside of 3rd person is that looking around corners is a bit unrealistic. But in EVE, the third person is a notional computerised image of the world around you.

The only time 1st person, to me, is more immersive, is a straightforward tunnel/horror shooter. In that case, 1st person perfectly mimics the "tunnel vision" you feel when you're scared - i.e. you lose situational awareness.

At any rate, wrt EVE, you can just leave the camera at whatever distance and position you want while you're flying, nothing says you have to spin your view. It might be nice if that camera position were retained on transitions though - perhaps that would do you?

Although a fixed 3rd person camera would probably feel odd to me,
the option of being able to fix the camera on a spot in space or relative to the ship
would be pretty awesome !

Always wanted to see my ship warp away,
instead of seeing my ship warp !
(if that makes sense, linguistically)

Of course, a timer would be needed for this,
to put the camera back in place,
because else i'd never see my ship again ... but hey ! lol

Hooray, this awful idea again. In the wrong sub-forum. Move it to F&I so it can be moved somewhere it can die quietly.
