Somebody settle this argument...!

Torpedoes are not AoE to my knowledge. Like all missiles, they have a blast radius - but this only affects the target, and does not spread damage to surrounding potential targets.

Someone please tell me that I'm right - that a torpedo slamming into a rat will not take out nearby drones that are trying to kill the rat themselves. I'm dealing with someone here who is resolutely adamant that torps are AoE and it was a torp hitting something that wiped out his drones.
Help me win this argument, and you might get a cookie out of it.

Yeah, you're right. Torpedoes are not AoE -- anymore. That change went through a looooong time ago.

A long long time ago.

This was when normal missiles lost their AOE, pre-Exodus expansion (Exodus being patch 2942, November 14th 2004) and iirc, it was somewhere between there and Exodus (or at least, Exodus: Cold War) when Torpedoes actually lost AOE.

It's actually not a blast radius anymore, it's more of an average accuracy of the missile in question - how close does it usually get to the center of the target before going boom.

Technically, the absence of a significant explosion radius would be easy to explain by the warheads being actually directional - e.g. nuke-pumped lasers for EM warheads, etc.

The silly visual effect, him, was not removed and becomes quickly annoying when you're killing a dozen +of torpedoes rats...

Not that a torpedo would do any sort of damage at all to drones even if it did hit them... just sayin'.

You shoot AOE torp at rat. NInja salveger comes in. Aoe torp hits salvagaer. You lose 2 bil golem.

This is why AOE is BAD!

Back then, when they did AOE damage, there was no sig radius tanking. Missiles simply did full damage (also, kestrel could fit cruise missiles) :D

with the addition of torps being AOE, back then you could fit them in heavy launchers (standard launchers could fit cruise missiles btw. cruise kessie ftw \o\), this meant that my rupture with heavy launchers that shot torps back then was quite unwelcome in mining ops, as I discovered once when I was guarding the op.

They could easily code it in that AoE splash damage cannot trigger aggression, same as most other MMOs do. They probably had other reasons for doing away with it. Like blob vs blob, I bet massive AoE damage took all fun and skill right out of it since with the current targetting/cycle system logistics would have a hack of a time keeping everyone up, unless they got an AoE heal and HoTs...and that's something even I don't want to see in EVE.

There is AoE in Eve: bombs. They trigger aggression on everyone hit by them, and bomber raids are absolutely deadly against ships that otherwise depend on logistics.

I remember hearing about people podding themselves with their last volley's splash damage when fired from their ships just before their ships popped.

It didn't happen very often but it was always hilarious.

I still see bombers bomb themselves now and then.

I did it once in a Typhoon. It was pretty funny. That last volley I got off killed the guy tackling me, and the aoe popped my pod.

Good times.
