Looking to venture into lowsec space purely for recce what kind of ship and fit? or does it not really matter aslong as its a cheapo

if you just want to look around, take a shuttle.
otherwise something fast and agile.

The fastest frig for your race: Vigil, Atron, Condor or Executioner. Fit MWD if you can and fit low slots with nanofibers or inertia stabs. Don't use MWD when you try to warp away. Also, make sure you have an updated clone and don't have expensive implants.

Last evening I took a cyno alt deep into nulsec. I reached the first destination, but there was a change of plans so I headed about 16 jumps to the new destination.

I went 35 jumps before I hit a bubbled gate, though I managed to avoid many drag bubbles along the way setup 100 km off gates; never warp directly gate-to-gate!

I got caught in a bubble on the gate by an Oracle (battlecruiser), and a moment later a Hound (stealth bomber) and Ares (interceptor) appeared. They made the mistake of not warp disrupting me, and I actually managed to get out of the bubble and warp away in structure.

However, as the system only had 2 gates, my fate was already sealed. I warped around for a bit and then tried to leave the system, but I think the Ares was cloaked at the gate (would explain why it wasn't at the bubble when I jumped in), and jumped into the next system as I did. The Ares pretty much insta-locked my alt's ship, then my alt's pod.

Still, my alt made it about 35 jumps through nulsec. In a rookie ship.
