How to read killboards

Hi everyone, along other sources of informations when looking up a corp or a player, killboards seem to be a valuable intel, but of all the links I've followed so far, I can't seem to grasp it.

I often come across KM/KB links on the forums or various chat channels, but aside from the actual kills where I sometimes reproduce a loadout in EFT for fitting ideas, what should I look at? I don't have any pvp experience yet so I've no idea what makes cheapo kills for KB grinding's sake (other than tons of rookie ships, ofc), or good killboards. Besides, with all the alliances things, makes it even more complicated to sort out what actually happens, when kills have like 10 folks listed in KM with 5 different corps amongst 3 alliances (totally random and bogus example).

So, is there some guidelines or KB for dummies to RTFM somewhere?

A killboard can show you when a person is most active (what general times does he/she kill and/or get killed), what ships he/she flies**, and whether or not the person has "friends" (look for the "related kills" option on the killmail).

**Being able to read killboards goes in hand in hand with knowing the different tactics different ships use and what mods do what.
For example: if you see that a person generally uses ships with shield setups and "long range" ammo in the guns then it's a safe bet that the person employs kiting tactics.

It gives you an idea of the following:

- Where does the guy / corp operate
- What kind of ships do they fly
- What kind of pvp do they prefer (large scale battles, small fleet roams, killing of single targets)
- Efficiency of the player / corp.
- Besides kills, also the losses of the corp.

There is no guide on how to read killboards, it's mainly just look at it and then judge if you like it.

Your example here usually means there is an alliance fleet going (you likely encounter that many alliance kills have multiple corps on it as you fly with your alliance, not only with you corp when you are in any alliance.

The point where there are multiple alliances are on 1 kill comes because alliances team up. Many many null-sec alliance have other alliances as friend (blue) and several others as enemy (ranging from neutral to red). The blue buddies will team up to kill a mutual enemy alliance. They both gain something out of it, namely 1 enemy less to fight and more space to use.

Examples:

Red Alliance (and their 'minor' friends) and Shadow of xXDeathXx (again and their 'minor friends) are blue to each other to fight SOLAR FLEET (and 'minor' friends) and Against All Authorities (and their 'minor' friends).

I say minor friends after each major alliance as all 4 listed have several smaller alliance that helps them fight wars, mainly cause these smaller alliance are either renters or pets from the major alliance and are ordered to help fight for their master.

Besides these 4 there is another major alliance involved in the war on the RA / xDeath side which is Pandemic Legion, the difference for them is they are just mercs for hire. They fight in the war because they get paid to fight in the war.
