I'm looking for the best tackling ship right now and as I know that's the broadest way I could've put it, I don't have any other way to say it.

Some people say Ares others say a Taranis...

Either / or - what would be the best fit? Obviously if it's for a fleet or gang engagement it should be MWD fit... is this correct?

Given that you already said you don't know how to express your question better; if you can answer a few questions in turn folk can give much better advice for you.

How big are the gangs your flying in? ( solo, 3-5, 10-20, 100's? )
Are you flying lone tackle or part of a coordinated wolf pack? ( are you the only one folk are expecting to long point and potentially scram targets? how about webs? do you have support ships with you providing ewar cover such as TD's etc? )
What are you normally hunting? ( mission / plex runners / belt ratters / miners? Gate camp buffet? Combat tackle for fleet dps ships? Super cap or capital hunting? )
What can you fly? ( HIC's, DICS?, AF's, Inties? crusiers or Battlecruisers? Huggin's or Arazus? Racial options? )
Do you fight against nano ships alot? ( angel ships such as dramiels and cynabals? i.e. is a scram essential to letting your gang kill something? )
Do you need to be the decloak guy too? ( high sig res, agility and speed critical to your success? )

There are more, but if you can provide some insight to the above folk will be able to flood you with specific info and insights.

As a general rule, any of the interceptors are generally acceptable.

Gang size: 5-20 (small gang roaming)
Lone tackle, sometimes part of a pair. everything else is either T3 BC, BC, or smaller.
Combat tackle for DPS ships, and some gate camping.
I can fly AFs, Intys, BCs, and T3 BCs fully T2 fit. Prefer Gallente and Minmatar.
We don't usually engage nano fits, no.
And no I don't need to be the decloak.

Low sec without war decs or Null? ( i.e. gate gun concerns? )
How about skirmish links? are they available to you often?

with the ships types listed, flying in Null as a part of a small gang:

Ceptors would be fine, however you might want to consider alternatives.

the ranis is a better option than the ares, the extra DPS helps and the speed lose won't kill you given the speed of the rest of your gang.

Alternatives: if you are in a small gang, you may get more milage off of a cane sebo'd up to allow for quick lock times. The extra firepower will help alot to take targets down before backup arrives.

You can take a few deployable bubbles along in your cargo bay in the event you guys find a nice choke system to camp for a few.

the inty might be better for the gang in the event you need rolling safes to hide from a larger fleet for a while but your FC should be able to provide guidance based on what he wants your non-combat role to be.

MWD is expected in Null, if only to burn out of bubbles. Most of your tagets in Null will be MWD fit so if your concerned about catching them you'll need some git-up-n-go yourself.

As far as Interceptors go, I recommend the Malediction or the Stiletto. Both are excellent long range tacklers. Stiletto has the benefit of 4 mid slots; You can dual prop, fit extra tackle, slap on an MSE (though some insist Inties never have a shield extender), tracking disruptor, etc. Lots of options. Malediction has good EHP and much better cap so you can run MWD+Point(s) for much longer.

Not to say that the Ares is bad; it's very fast and also pretty popular, just not my favorite. The Raptor is certainly the worst of the lot - no reason to fly it unless it is all you can fly. Since you already fly Minnie stuff, give the Stiletto a spin.

Make sure to use either a sensor booster or a rig to increase your targeting range, otherwise the length of your long point will exceed your targeting range.

If you want heavier tackle, it's really frikkin' hard to shake off a Vengeance. They are quite beastly tank-wise and if you add a nos to the already great capacitor, they're not easy to neut off either.
