Ah, so Sir is a Tempest man! Armour 'canes can do well, in fact I know someone that regularly runs L4s in an armour 'cane. Takes him a while to complete them and is pretty much max skilled in it, but it is possible.

For the 'pest you could go with something like a pair of large armour rep's, damage control, 2x explo hardeners (active) and a kin hardener (active) against Angels. Fill the mids with cap rechargers and use nanobot accelerator rigs x2 and a nanopump. With decent cap skills you should be able to tank around the 380 dps mark cap stable. The second rep is there for the "holy crap!" moments but it will cap you out in around 90 seconds from full although your tank should be up to about 800. So maybe 30 seconds of extra tank.

This is why the cap boosters are such a boon. With a heavy booster running 800s you will be pretty much cap stable running both rep's for as long as you have boosters and will still be cap stable with a single rep running and not using the cap booster.

So if bad things happen you activate both the second rep and the cap booster, treat it as an insurance policy rather than as a standard part of the tank and your boosters will last ages.

The downside with the above is that you have no space for damage mods so you're going to be looking at around 300dps or so from your guns. Will do L4s but will take some time. The other advantage of the 'pest is that it has 2 highs that won't take guns so you could still fit a tractor and salvager in there.

I'll have to try that out. What say you to this fit (the Armageddon I spoke of): http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/39743-Armageddon-lvl-4-mission-beam-ship.html ? Any merit?

Yeah, that 'geddon looks pretty solid. Beware that laser only deal combined em/therm damage so shooting against Angels will take longer because those are their two highest resists.

As general fitting advice remember the simple rule.

Resists are king: They effectively boost your repper/shield booster because each actual hp regained is worth more. Repairing 10 hp per second with 90% resists is better than repairing 20 hp per second with 50% resists. First represents 100 points of raw received damage the second 40 points of raw received damage.

Once you've got the resists sorted out then you can worry about the rest. Good cap regen is important especially if you are using weapons that require cap to fire. When fitting a ship with lasers load multifreq ammo for "worst case scenario" cap usage. Multifreq are a pig on cap.

Remember that there are two ways to boost cap regen. First is to decrease your ships cap recharge time, the second is to increase the amount of cap that you have. Cap rechargers, flux coils, power relays, CCC rigs. all decrease the recharge time. Cap batteries/semiconductor memory cell rigs increase your base cap.

Power relays are bad for shield tanking ships because they reduce the amount your shield booster repairs and this is generally termed a "bad thing", but for armour tanking where you couldn't give a flying wossname about shield boost amount. \o/ Downside is that they take a low slot. /o\

Cap rechargers are generally better for armour tanks because they go in the mid slots but they aren't as effective.

One *big* thing to watch out for is stacking penalties. Each module after the first that effects the same thing on your ship will provide less and less of its stated benefit. As a general rule don't go for more than 3 of the same thing. But the above should give you a general idea of how to fit a tank. Crank open EFT and play with it a little, it won't take long to get a feel for things.

Having ratted in a miriad of ships, I can say for certain that minmatar is a good choice even for this activity. Here's the Maelstrom fit I use:

[High slots]

8x 1400mm Howitzer Artillery II

[Med slots]

Quad Lif Fueled I Booster Rockets
Cap Recharger II
X-Large Shield Booster II
Inulnerability Field II
Photon Scattering Field II
Sensor Booster II with a Scan Resolution and a Targeting Range script in the cargohold

[Low Slots]
3x Tracking Enhancer II
2x Gyrostabilizer II

[Rigs]

Large Ancilliary Current Router I
2x Large Capacitor Control Circuit I

Notes about it:

The idea with this fit is to stay out of the range of your enemies and clear them out before they get in close. I usually warp in at 70km, or, if I'm doing a mission with an acceleration gate, I microwarpdrive to around 70km and then start taking aggro from the npcs.

The tank is by no means cap stable, actually it runs out quite fast. As I've said above, the idea is to take out the npcs before they get close to you, hence the tank is something that will buy you a bit of time if you get into trouble (i. e. are warp disrupted by one of the rats and the other ones are getting close), so do not rely too much on it.

Also, you'll want to have a set of light drones and a set of mediums. You can snipe frigates from 40-50+ km, but under that range you'll need drones to take them out.

Some general things to keep in mind with fittings: look at what the ship gives bonus to. If it has a bonus to shield resists/tanking, it's peak efficiency will be as a shield tank. If it has bonus to optimal/falloff, it's a snipe ship. If it has a damage and a rate of fire bonus, as long as you use the racial guns, you can tank it however you want as long as the slot layout allows a relatively solid tank. And I say relatively solid because it depends on what you're going up against, how much damage you'll be taking, etc.

Edit: regarding the fit, if you can't fit t2, just go for the highest meta level you deem affordable. And then work your way up fast to t2, because it's totally worth it.
