Torp damage calculations

So, today I took a Purifier ratting against some Sanshas. Being a non-stupid person, I loaded EM torps to both utilize the purifier's damage bonus and hit their lowest resists. Being a curious person, I checked the individual damage of a single Mjolnir Torpedo.

"EM Damage: 864"

Okay. So, after killing a few spawns, I decided to ungroup my torps for more efficiency and less wasted volleys against stuff which dies quickly. That's when I noticed something interesting. I was shooting the structure of a Sansha's Plague Lord (0% EM resist) and regularly hitting for 1000+ damage. How is this possible when my base damage is 864? I know that turrets can crit and whatnot, but shouldn't missiles hit for the same-ish damage no matter what?

If it helps, I had two target painters on the rat, but if I understand torp damage correctly, TP's don't actually increase your max damage; they just reduce the damage that you lose due to the target's sig.

So, help me out here. Why are my torps hitting for above their max damage? (Not that I'm complaining)

Are you sure that 864 is the correct damage for your torps? That would mean you have some really poor combination of skills like to Torps 3, Covops 1, and Warhead Upgrades 2.

Ed: For the record, you should be seeing ~1280 with Covops 4, Torps 4, and Warhead Up 4.

Did you show info on a charge in your cargo, or in your launcher? It only shows damage with skills applied in the launcher.

In my launcher. When I view in cargo, it says 450.

I have covops 4 and torps 4... And then I just realized I have warhead upgrades injected but not trained. Oops

Whelp, now I feel like a massive noob. Although, at level 4 that's +8%, so that would be 933 if I did have that trained. How are you getting 1280?

Anyway, that's besides the point. I still shouldn't be hitting for higher than my max damage. Straight

OH: These are t1 vanilla torps, so maybe you were calcaulting with faction or rage. I don't feel like spending those on rats, but that would explain why my volley damage is lower than yours. (although still not the higher-than-max-damage-hits)

Visually, individual missiles will auto-group if they're launched close together. I've never checked to see if they hit as a group or as individual missiles (meaning, is the auto-group is just a visual effect and not an actual grouping of missiles?)

They hit as individual missiles, not as a group. Of this, I'm certain.

Last time I took a close look at missile damage readings on the fitting screen which wa sa good while ago, the numbers were hopelessly wrong (not including BCS or something). I wouldn't be surprised if this hasn't been fixed yet.

The reason they appear to group together is that they were launched in the same 1 second server tick, so according to the server they launched at the same time, and will therefore hit at the same time, however they are simply 2 object directly on top of one another, so they will still hit separately.
