Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be launched by Microsoft on Feb 29th, 3pm to 5pm local time in Barcelona, Spain.

This is not the Windows 8 Developer preview but more of a Windows 8 Beta.

Anyone going to try it? I know I am, doesn't hurt to try new things.

Those of you who have tried the Developer Preview, how has it been for EVE and General use?

Will update tomorrow with the download page for those who are interested and/or don't know where to find it.

Virtual Machines
It works under Virtualbox both 86 and 64.

Those who want the Windows 7 style menu back and remove MetroUI can do this in cmd

Quote:
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer" /v RPEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d "0"

Microsoft did a sneaky and removed this properly in Consumer Preview.

I know this sounds weird but all I really want windows to do is not **** up and just start my damn programs without using too much CPU and memory.

Doesn't sound weird, sounds like you want an optimised system.

I love the Win7 feel myself, and don't like the MetroUI.

However, from what I've read Win8 does use less memory, so I'm hoping to jump on it and give it the Win7 look and carry on. Just with a smoother/less resource hungry system.

They've been saying that since Win95 and it's never been true.

Always room for hope. Lol It's slightly more probable this time due to their news of merging the codebase /w Windows Mobile. I could also argue that 7 was more optimized b/c I've seen it extend the life of several 'middle age' PC setups (and a Turion notebook from 2005).

I'm in no hurry myself. Things are quite stable on my own setup, and would prefer someone else blazing the trail this time. Smile

Well technically it's true if you went from Vista to 7

Just my guess, but it will disapoint. MS does this same pattern all the time. They build a new shell and put it on the previous version OS code base. They let the hapless consumer find where the interfaces perform badly, and then update the the OS. This has been going on since Windows 2.

My personal opinion on the subject is that Windows 8 has it's place in the market and I'm not going to knock it because of Metro.

I love the fast boot time and I can see how for grandma looking up recipes or for folks just using Facebook and Twitter will find it very handy.

It just isn't for me right now. Windows 7 was a home run and I have it going the way I like it. I might use it for an HTPC build tho.

Windows 8 will be the new vista, having keyboard and mouse be secondary controls. Can't wait to see them try and sweep it under the rug like they did with vista once it flops as hard as it is going to.

Just hope they get rid of the 'look at me! look at how clever and awesome I am!'...like my operating system has become some kind of child that performs magical acts of wunderkind amazement, but instead comes off as a fat kid break-dancing desperate to good at something, which requires constant attention or it will have a strop.

You know the kind of thing:

The pop up notifications that when you click on it, tells you it 'needs to update Windows Defender' [the name even sounds like something a child would come up with] and when it's finished says 'Windows has updated Windows Defender', as if I didn't believe the operating system was capable of completing this, like it's some kind of challenge and that I should stand up and clap my hands together.

What's worse is that if you ignore it for a few days, it stops reminding you and you forget. I can't recall how many times I've gone shopping online and then immediately after I've put in my card details, the message that could potentially mean someone has stolen my information pops up in the notification tray. It's like it's punishing me for not paying Windows enough attention like a spoiled brat who eats all the pies and then throws up at grandmas house because it didn't get a pony for xmas.

When I switch on my teevee, so I can play GTA4 at 1080p running off the PC, it voices an off-tone alerting sound, like it's saying 'noooo I want you to pay me attention'.

Even when Windows7 boots it has that bleepy orchestral theme that's tacky as hell, like I should jump and down in joy that Windows managed not to crash on me in the act of being given electricity.

Microsoft have sort of got this on Hotmail. I log on to delete my fake rolex watches spam, and straight afterwards a message on the screen says 'you have no spam - this means hotmail's spam filter is working!'. Which is a dumb thing to tell someone who has just deleted about a gazillion spam emails.

So yeah - if they have gotten rid of all this bs, it'll be worth it.
