client-side settings all reset to defaults after computer crash

I logged in to find EVE just as it is when you download it for the first time. None of the setting that are stored on my end are being accessed. All of my UI windows were reset, my overview has zero settings on it, all my chatrooms were closed, and all of the other changes I had made were reset.

What do I do to fix this?

Additional info:
This happened when I logged in following a computer crash from which I had to reset. Nothing else on the computer seems affected. Also, right before this happened, I noticed something odd though probably not connected: when I minimized all of my EVE chats, it created an icon for them in the lefthand sidebar. When I restored them, the icon was still present. I could not make it go away without closing the chats. I was about to restart EVE to fix it when the computer crashed.

I too have suffered the same issue several times now. I know that the crash is caused by a client side hardware issue, but I don't know why this would create a software fault with eve, especially seeing as how no other software on my system is affected. It's becoming a serious burden to to reconfigure all of my settings every time this happens. I have tried to replace the entire eve folder in my %/appdata/Local/EVE.... directory with no success, even though the all of my personal settings seem to be intact in the tranquility sub-directory. If I had to guess I would say this seems to be a registry issue, but I am not familiar enough with eve's registry structure to attempt to poke around in it unguided. I have gone back 30 or so pages on the forum and have not found any thread relating to this issue that has been responded to by a GM or DEV and so am asking for help here. If there is a fix for this, or even a way that I can save all of my personal settings externally and simply copy and paste them when this happens it would be much easier.

I hear people say to just "back up your settings", but that doesn't seem to work as many others will attest. Perhaps we can get a blue response here to explain this to us and how we can work around it.

Also, do you know where exactly I find these settings files? I see [bin], [lib], [bulkdata], [res], and [scripts]. I can't find any [cache] or [settings] folders like I expected, and I don't know what the other folder titles even mean.

Assuming you are using windows 7, all of the client side settings are stored in C:\Users\%Username%\Appdata\Local\CCP\EVE directory. Each individual install has it's own folder named by location and server, (tranquility, singularity....).

I don't use windows 7, actually I use windows XP. I got as far as C:\Documents and Settings\TheReaverOfDarkness\Application Data but there's no CCP or EVE folder there. I have an EVE folder in TheReaverOfDarkness\My Documents but I think it's only got logs and such.
