From my experience: pretty well - depends on you provider and on what you're doing ingame.

I used to play like this for a while. As far as I remember it was pretty decent, although I still did not risk going into big fights with that connection.

As LCO said, it depends on your device and carrier, I've personally been able to play just fine using my HTC Eris and Verizon, and its been fairly forgiving of the brief momentary disconnects when I've bumped the cord the wrong way. That being said, I wouldn't trust it to PVP in, nor would i do a hard mission on it, since the probability of losing connection is a lot higher than with conventional internet.

Keep in mind, that whether you have 3G, 3.5G or 4G makes a significant difference. You will have much better luck with any 4G Android than an iPhone of any variety.

I know a few people who use 3G and 4G to play with... works great, until they try to use a voice program (in game, axon, or TS.) Then they tend to start disconnecting and blasting use with static at inopportune times.

I have run multiple maze sites using a 3G mobile broadband t-stick. 3 Alts multi-boxing. I have also been in numerous fleet flights using the same connection - You need to be careful with your clicks and need to have decent overview set ups. But it is possible - actually with decent overview set ups you can even be a dictor pilot or a logi or an FC.

Setting up other coms programs, skype, vent, ts, mumble, jabber, etc correctly matters as well.

would be nice with a little andriod app to be able to log in and chat and sort out the skills.
you could even be shown as logged in into corp chat but not be logged in in space for example.
just add a little "M" for mobile login on the characters icon in chat.

but for full eve action its propably a year or 3 away on pads and such.

Obvious troll is obvious.

My iPhone is the most reliable form of Internet connection I have. My partner has one of those MiFi devices which is specifically designed to provide Internet access but it's a steaming pile of dog poo - it only charges if you plug it in to specifically modified USB ports, and the UI is indecipherable.

I have played EVE over the 3G connection quite happily, though latencies on 3G are almost as high again as latencies from Australia to the rest of the world (250ms for Australia -> World, another 150ms for 3G -> Internet). It's fine for cargo hauling, running missions, mining or station spinning. I wouldn't try Incursions or PvP in it (especially not if I was flying logistics).

Forum swallowed my post. Shortened version.

1. Obvious iPhone fanboy is obvious. Network speeds go somewhere like this: 3G - HSPA/CDMA, 3.5G - HSPA+, 4G - WiMAX/LTE. iPhone doesn't even use HSPA+, it's way down at old 3G from like five years ago. And even the iPhone 5 won't support 4G.

2. With a 4G device, you can fallback to 3G if the 4G connection is lost, which means you will reconnect faster, possibly without even disconnecting on EVE.

3. My Bionic in the Chicago area is reporting some 10 Mbps down *and up* with around 30 ms ping (what was yours, 150?), via Mobile Hotspot. You may b comfortable doing mining, hauling, and ship spinning on your iPhone, I could do fleet fights.

Sorry. Old tech is old tech. No matter how shiny an iPhone is on the outside, they're still using outdated chips on the inside. Mind you, I can't speak for Australia's data networks, but an LTE device will always top an HSPA device where available.

You do know that you could be playing most of EVE just fine from a old-timey 28k modem (except for fleet warfare and maybe the Jita undock), don't you ?
It's not the network speed that matters much most of the time, it's the "ping" - and the combined number Mara Rinn posted was 0.4 seconds.

6 months ago easy, now I hope you have some kind of cooling pad for your laptop as thats gunna be the bigger issue than the connection.

Decently enough to switch skills or play the market, but I wouldn't get into any fleets for fear of dropping connection.

Doesn't even overheat with CQ turned on, so I don't know whats everybody's issue is as far as heating goes.

Thanks all for the reply, I do a fair bit of travel and there's a town that I go to that's apparently still in the 90s.

For gaming, 0.4s is an atrocious ping. A lot of it is the Australia > World bit, which she can't help, but 150ms is pretty nasty. My device adds at most 20-25ms to the equation. I'm not saying it doesn't work for her, but if someone's requested information on how well EVE works on a smartphone, the fact that the ping is five times lower on a 4G phone compared to a 3G phone is worth noting, especially if they are considering getting a new phone specifically for the hotspot service or something.

Regarding heat... no problems on my Core i5. The built-in Intel graphics chipset has no problem with overheating, and runs Incarna beautifully.

I've run EVE over my Blackberry with Verizon's crap tethered service, and it works just fine for both my desktop (when my cable dies) and on my laptop. Just don't use EVE voice when you do it or you may quickly go over your bandwidth allotment and end up paying $$ for extra bandwidth. I lucked out with a package that doesn't have a restriction on how much I can download a month :)

I've run Eve successfully over a tethered 3G connection, was running c2 wormhole sites & chatting in corp with no problems

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
