There has been a great deal of excitement over this tech recently. The first 5ghz tech that can supposedly reach over 1 Gigabit per second in a home network distance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11ac

Anyone else following this or have plans to upgrade?

For me I am still on G after a bad experience on N as I did not need the extra bandwidth anyway. Yet I am considering going to ac after it is fully ratified in 2013 as that will match when I plan to invest funds into a fully networked home experience.

This will also be the only wireless tech that can make full use of Google's 1 Gigabit fiber ISP If it ever comes to the area I will live in. While I will personally never actually need that much speed. I can anticipate that it will cause any G and N routers to choke and interrupt any other network activity.

What about you?

I only very recently got a N solely to have a laptop get connection back in my bedroom but have since then connected the other laptop, my iphone, and one blueray to it (and of course my pc by cable). The only issue that I have had is the one laptop in the bedroom while watching netflix where the sound and video desync to which I just skip back a little and it fixes it for a while. I don't think it's the network doing this even though it's the only device where the signal is going through several walls, but rather just the laptop itself being my oldest model.
Upgrading past this won't make a bit of difference since I don't foresee fibers coming my way any time soon. I mean we don't even have cable yet in my area. We have digital broadband that is transmitted from the mountain down to a tower that was recently installed in my backyard (provides the town with service as I have a better LOS than the mountain, I get free internet out of the deal, and the station is 30 ft away from me for the ultimate signal strength)
Before that I have been using an old Lynksys that I've had for who knows how long, and its still in service.

Some sort of microwave site to site and then Wifi to the rest of the town? Is it a municipal?

Asking because another pioneering technology is "White Space Internet" Which uses the unused channels in the TV spectrum to broadcast a 15 Megabit signal that can travel 100km. It is being hailed as a way for more Municipal ISPs to form without local councils derailing it over costs of installing fiber or cable to every home in town. And of course for ISPs such as google to criscross backbone fiber between cities and use White space to offer service to the rural areas between them.

BTW I mise well use this topic to post links to news articles as this new tech evolves.

You just went beyond my expertise in networking signals. All I know is that I've got a view of the town and the ski resort (where all the towers reside) and the town doesn't. Free internet is better than paid internet so I went with it especially since the space they asked for is in a unused section of yard. I know on most nights I can hit 600 on my download and the other night I downloaded eve onto the newer laptop within an hour.
The town is wired for cable, just not my neighborhood. Too few of us up here for the company to bother with the expense.
