Free 3D of choice for me has always been Blender, I'll go have a look at this one. Thanks.

I picked up the packages about a week ago but I've had little time to play with them so far.

Origanillay I trained CGI on 3DSmax at college some 10 years ago for a couple of years , I also followed 'Terragen' a free landscape program. Things changed in my life some 8 years ago and I never continued with my interest.

Recently been wanting to get back into doing some renders but software is prohibitavly expensive, this offer gave me the chance but as I say haven't really had chance to test out the software too much.

TBH CGI is the only formal education I've ever passed (even failed Gcse's got B,B,B,D you need at least C,C,C,C to be considered a pass) .

Also I'd be willing to help anyone new to rendering with getting there head round the basics or swopping notes with those who already know what there doing.

How about you ever done any CGI ?

For someone looking to do this for free, Sketchup + Kerkythea.

Sketchup is not exactly organic friendly, but many free plugins are available that make it easier and it is a good foot in the door. Kerkythea is a "full featured" but totally free rendering software that is capable of being ran on a render farm. I once used 6 computers to render a very high resolution, complex model for example. It takes a bit to manually set it up and you need a copy of the model on each PC. There may be ways to automate this that I am unfamiliar with.

Of course I just do it for fun, so...

Something to look into.

Yes, for better or worse it is my life lol:)

I mainly use Maya, but I'm always on the lookout for cool low cost/free alternatives to experiment with.

Just briefly opening it, Daz looks like it has a nice character generator and I'm impressed with its export options allowing you to send ot other applications. nice esp for free:)

I'd get them all while there going. You never know.

And I'd be happy to teach anyone who's interested the theory and something about the basics of the tools if anyone new to CGI wants to have a go.

Perhaps I could start a 'group learning' thread.

Consider me already on-board. I've been subscribed to Daz Studios for awhile now and seem to have missed this great sale. Quite literally. I've tried earlier versions of Daz Studio software in a trial, same with both 3DMax and a poorly outdated rip and version of Maya. I've have also dabbled in Blender recently with some Sketch Up on the side. I have decent CS5 Adobe skills.

During the last Create a ship contest I gave it a shot but soon realized I was over my head in learning the new software. But by all means consider me interested. I am downloading these free packages tonight to give it a go. My hope is to finish my original vision of my ship from last fall.

I was hoping this meant rendering .RFU files but it doesn't look like it. I'll probably just DL a newer version of Revit on my PC so I can render multiple images at once and DL this stuff as well cause I like screwing around with these programs when I don't have much else to do.
