Colour combinations (not patterns) would be no different that they are now (except for the ships missing new pgs textures).
EDIT- that is actually incorrect, if there were huge amounts of different ships your client would still have to identify what they were with a ship id (or whatever they would use) and then your client would have to load the relevant .red file and load into your video memory when they were inside the clipping range or you were looking at it close enough not to see low mipmaps or just brackets. Which is why you'd want to be able to turn it off,

Must have feature! I'd log in and just spend all my time in this making different looking ships! Though I could do without silly stuff like fur prints.

Did your survey on it.

It should function like character customization, ie you get a station service and it doesn't cost you anything, just changes visual appearance.

Oh and we absolutely must be able to put corp and alliance logos on it.. Flying around with the FCON phoenix logo on my hull would just be too awesome.

There's nowhere just anybody can play with this feature before being implemented right?
