Random server disconnects, but UI remains

This has happened twice to me now in the last week. Before and after the patch. I'm not sure what the trigger is. I'll just be sitting somewhere cloaked, I'll make some request on the server such as requesting information on another corp's wars and then it will sit there and the request will time out. And then all of a sudden I get dropped to the login screen (I'm pretty sure this isn't a relaunch of the client) but the entire UI remains from when I was logged in. I can see everyone who was in local, scroll through previous chat, see things on overview that were there when I got DCed. But nothing receives updates anymore.

When it DC'd it popped up 3 error windows (2 of them were related to server queries I had made "Connection Lost: The socket was closed") and one "Information: Connection to server lost."

If I try to issue any commands it comes up with an error window "Connection Lost" with the text of "The transport has not yet been connected, or authentication was not successful".

Just a heads up about this new issue. It doesn't seem to be very common, but I thought you guys might find it interesting.

i have been having this exact same problem, its been on going for a while now.

i spoke with my ISP and they ensured they dont throttle or block any ports.

sometimes it happens very frequently, like 2-3 times an evening, sometimes i won't see it for a week.

I get the same issue intermittently when my wireless network decides to fumble a bunch of packets onto the floor (the Ralink 2561 is not known for good RX performance...). I'd suspect the OP has a packet loss problem that's triggering the issue; as to the GUI windows still being visible post-disconnect, though, that's a bug. (I also may get 1 or 2 "socket closed" dialog boxes depending on circumstances yet unknown.)

Actually we do experience intermittent packet loss from our net provider. But that was occurring for months before this. And I didn't detect any packet loss at the time of the drop (but it very well could have happened).

The times this happened were:

Sept 2nd, 2011, 18:59
Sept 14th, 2011, 18:26

I have screenshots of both times

Happened against last night at downtime. Was asleep at the time, but was still getting server shutdown messages, so I assume I was still connected right up until the end

There are two separate issues here, and they should be investigated independently.

The first one would be the actual disconnect, which is just that and mostly has it's reasons outside of our circle of influence. To investigate why this disconnect happens in the first place, please take a look into the following thread in here as well, which does contain some steps to analyze those as well as hints on what has caused them for other players:
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=7484&find=unread

The second issue is the client not properly restarting as it should after running into a disconnect, and sort of overlaying the log in screen over the last image the client has shown. We are aware that this is happening, but have a hard time reproducing this specific behavior. If you are able to get this to happen more or less reliably, then please try catching it with our logserver tool and file a bug report. If this happens to you, then I recommend to manually close and restart the client before logging in again.

I'll see if I can get a logserver trace of it, as it happens to me consistently if I let the client sit there untouched after I start seeing signs of connection failure.

Update: sorry for the delay, but it is now issue #117117 in the bugtracker, with a logserver trace attached.

Sorry for the bump, but issue #117117 seems to have vanished. What happened?

Edit: the session timeout ate it. The issue has been reposted as #117629.
