I'm applying for a PHD at NTNU, with the salary advertised as 391K-489K (depending on god knows what). How does that compare to living costs? How much do you spend on housing/eating/etc/etc, and how much do you have left?

Thanks in advance!

I assume k NOK? In that case, it is a very good salary for a phd, and you will live very well. Go for it!

Persoanlly I spend 7k NOK on housing each month, and maybe 2k on food. I got an esitamted 25k NOK each month from my work. My brother attends NTNU, and he is living in a student dorm for 3k NOK each month.

Read something recently. Norway has somewhat high cost of living. I am not saying it is not worth it. Just somewhat high.

Also. Their Navy is also recruiting: http://www.tnp.no/norway/panorama/2706-norwegian-navy-to-recruit-foreign-staff

Life is short and dinner time is chancy

That wage is p.good.

I am guessing it is Trondheim then yeah ? I don't hink NTNU has branches anywhere else. this is the most expensive city in Norway/world

for an apartment 40Sq meters (Smack middle in town) you are looking at 9/10K a month. going up from there you start looking at luxury single apartments.
Broadband 20Mbit 500 Kr
Electricity 625 Kr (2,5 every quarter, this is high usage)
Food ( Can't estimate this unhealthy foods is much more expensive eat healthy and you eat cheap)

That's it for my bills anyhow.

But yeah you will live very well on that wage. As a immigrant you can apply for a 10% tax reduction for 2 years at the tax office as well.

If it is Trondheim you are moving to you will find it's the healthiest city in the western world by a loong shot everything is focused around using the nature around it for running/skiing/cycling and there is no end to the ammenities available for any sport you can imagine.

send me a ingame mail I can probably help you meet some people so you can get a social circle.
The way norwegians are it is not hard to make friends once you have a few as you will keep expanding that circle but actually getting to know one person enough for them to introduce you to anybody can be quite hard there isn't much of a friday night at the pubs culture

Seems I'll get the "low" amount, but 390K seems nice as well.

Is it enough to support two people?

Yes it should be.

What really makes the difference in your living cost is how close to town you need/want to live

Trondheim is one of norways most expensive places to rent. due to massive influx of students.
every year.

What you find is that while 10K a month gets you 40/50 Sq/M in middle of town you go 20/30 minutes on the bus out of town and your looking at double the space for the same price. Which is suitable for 2 people. 50sq for 2 is ok but can be a bit tight not sure what your expectations are for living space.

Monthly travel pass (which is usaeable for any route within and a far bit outwith city borders is 600Kr.
it's not personalised to your person so can be shared too :P

Whoo! I'm called in for an interview. Now, they will cover my flight and accomodation, but could any trodheimers recommend me a reasonably priced place for two nights that is near the uni campus?
