EvE is real, so much so that comparison of real life relevance is now used as a platform to debate morality in a Sci Fi game. Roll

I don't know which is worse. Promoting a generalised dissasociated belief or trivialising RL ethics.

Lets take the derived conclusion to the max then and promote EvE as the platform for resolving RL wars.

Have you read about some of the politics that goes on in 0.0? These "conflicts" don't just come out of thin air. They also get perpetuated the same way RL conflicts do. In fact, I bet someone could write a paper on how similar the 0.0 politics are to RL politics.

I've found most people in EvE adhere to some kind of code of ethics/honor, generally of the blue or orange variety. RL comparisons really don't apply, unless you live in Somalia.

It's simple.

A videogame is not real life. You are not a psychopath because you shoot people in Modern Warfare. You are not a serial killer if you murder miners in EVE nor are you a criminal if you scam people out of their ingame money. You're simply playing the game as designed.

Of course conflict are derived from differences, I wouldn't deny that, though some derived conflicts in EvE are simply random based on killboard motivations than ethics, I just wouldn't draw a RL comparison (at all).

I've yet to see a real life politician at a memorial day say "ah, well it promotes PvP so its all good fun".

Having said that there probably are politicians who have an interest in the "war machine". But that seems like a corrupt few who have no scruples at all except for material wealth.

Mind considering the importance placed on Plex in a similar fashion that causes anti-social and selfish decisions in EvE it's clear to see elements of a similar nature here.

There are also alliances and corporations that suggest social co-operation also to achieve goals.

One thing for certain though, when you get podded your experience of the morality doesn't come to abrupt halt like real life. Well unless a rage quit is involved. Blink

However, considering that the developers themselves encourage a full range of "virtual" experiences on the morality spectrum and promote interesting ocntentious ideas themselves (e.g. slavery, intolerance) it is hardly suprising it has some mature themes.

So what do we do? Are you suggesting we have a screening service on a bi-annual basis to watch for bluring of realities? Are therefore games generating a generation of subversives? Are CCP therefore promoting the underpinning of social values?

Should I ask CCP to develop live baby ammunition to go for maximum psychological damage? Blink

The average EVE player is abnormal, no question but it isn't relative to that study. The Average EVE player is not nasty. Even the fearsome and trolly little goons. Most of them never set foot out of Deklien.

On the other habd we know this game has about a 24-36 month life. After that you are really just spinning your wheels, yet the Average player has been here 5 or 6 years. I include myself in this but we aren't quite right in the head.

I find that all this talk on the forums about Suicide Ganking this and Scam that is a lot like TV News. You live in a safe neighborhood but have triple locks on the doors and a gun under your pillow because in a city of Millions their are a couple of Stabbings a night up played to the extreme.

For the most part the average EVE Player is nice. Sure their are a lot of Gankers and Scammers in Trade Hubs but that is like an odd mix of Gang Territory and a Shopping Mall. The average day to day folks would be glad to become friends with you. You could probably become buddies with most Scammers and Gankers as well if you met them flying around and not as a target.

As for Low and Null they are PvP Space, I often don't find that the fighters their have any ill will towards you. They are simply the opposition.

EVE is Competitive but that doesn't mean most of your competitors are not nice people. Scamming and Ganking make up a very small contingent of the game and most of the people who defend it don't even participate in it but like that competitiveness and danger in the game they play.
