Found it a bit depressing that CCP had to hire or reassign someone to design a font. Typeface design isn't an easy thing, and the folks who do it professionally are skilled and expensive. It should have been easier to leverage existing typefaces from the OS. After all, since CCP licensed Arial anyway, that would cover 99% or more of all typographical needs in the game. Art resources spent on designing a font because of the not-invented-here syndrome?

CCP Punkturis isn't to blame on any of that, fwiw - she didn't design the font but implemented it in the UI.

The switch from all caps to actual upper and lower case text seems like a no-brainer when you get closer to a readable font. However, I agree that UI changes once foretold in a devblog should include scalable windows and fonts.

What I want to know about this, and the other devblog from yesterday, what's the timeline to Sisi and then TQ?

I'm hoping that these are not core updates for the winter expansion, but Incarna 1.2 updates that would include the conclusion of the captains quarters (to get that monkey off your back), due no later than October 2011...

+1 for "would like to play EVE on their TV" crowd. In fact, that's the only computer I currently own that's really capable of playing EVE.

It'd also be nice if EVE supported 720p, I know finding a PC that is less than 1024x768 resolution is hard these days, but it's a fairly common resolution for htpc setups. My setup also does 1080p, but holy god too small.

Some feedback:
- The font seems to be a bit too condensed (at least at the size like shown in the options menu screenshot), wouldn't mind it being a bit wider.
- Please make font sizes adjustments possible for more than just context menus and chats. This would make people with high pixel density screens happy

Confirming CCP Punkturis is hot in RL and she acted as model for at least one of the char creator hair styles.

I'd like the option of a fixed-width font (such as System) in my notepad please.

Thank you.

Edit...
An example of why I would ask for such a thing follows.
Here's a text chart of ammunition details with the current proportional forum font.

KM Round KD TD BSD BAD CNB%
036.0 Antimatter 28.0 20.0 32.80 34.00
045.0 Plutonium 24.0 20.0 30.40 31.00 05
054.0 Uranium 24.0 16.0 27.20 28.40 08
063.0 Thorium 20.0 16.0 24.80 25.40 40
072.0 Lead 20.0 12.0 21.60 22.80 50
086.4 Shadow Iridium 17.6 13.2 21.12 21.78 24
086.4 Iridium 16.0 12.0 19.20 19.80 24
100.8 Tungsten 16.0 08.0 16.00 17.20 27
115.2 Shadow Iron 13.2 08.8 14.96 15.62 30
115.2 Iron 12.0 08.0 13.60 14.20 30

Please note that, with a fixed-width font, the above columns would be perfectly aligned.
No added spaces for padding would be needed.

I would provide a second example with spaces added for padding to align the columns. Yet, the forum does not allow for such extra characters.Straight

Pasting the first example in the Windows Notepad will show you the potential of a fixed-width font.
It seems that the "System" font is not suitable. Courier works though and Fixedsys carries serious geek cred.

Also, using the market 'Compare Tool' to create such a table for frequent in-game look-ups is not practical.

I would like to qualify, so I don't sound like a complete bitter vet, that changes to the UI and font size are good and should be applauded.

I am saying however that making G look different from 6 without addressing the fundamental reason why most have problems with the font (it's too small) is like saying your solving world hunger by making sure that everyone has a barbeque set.

Nice step.

I have been playing Eve for the past 3 years without my glasses on. Much easier to make me lean in to read Eve Text then to suffer eye strain.

Will have to see how the font works in game to see how much of a problem the lack of font scaling will be.

This might get me logging in again.

So we get a more legible font and it will boost performance at the same time? Cool.

I'm sure it will look weird at first but it won't take long for my brain to adapt.

This is like touching up a scratch on your car's fender when the door has been torn off in an accident and is still missing. The fact that the UI is so primitive that it can't handle different fonts is the problem that should be getting attention. Spending time monkeying around with a single font to make it fit into a static UI is just not a smart use of anyone's time. Will this be an improvement over the current font? Yes. Should the UI be able to handle any font? Yes, and that is what should be the focus of a UI developer's time.

We distinguish the excellent man from the common man by saying that the former is the one who makes great demands upon himself, and the latter who makes no demands on himself.

Make them bigger, or rather give more options to increase the font size. EVE’s fonts have always been hard to read, especially on my high density laptop (15" 1680x1050).

So this was the mighty blog we were meant to get? A new font?

I am disappoint.

The Gaming MoD - retro to modern, console to MMO, I blog about it if it's a game and I'm interested in it. Yes, I play games other than Eve and I don't care if you think I'm wrong.

I'm delighted to see new fonts, however I can't believe that you are able to render spaceships but NOT allow for different fonts ... REALLY? You can't add 2 or 5 new fonts to give people a choice? If the old fonts needs to die ( I think it should, but I don't speak for everyone), then fine, but provide an alternative for those who prefer a different font style.

Thanks for the new fonts, please provide choices, I hate comparing to wow, but they do let full screen, diff fonts and many more customizations for make the play environment more immersive.

best,

AG

Much prefer the capitals in the escape menu, lower case looks weird.

Otherwise good work...finally.

Mentioned this in the other thread, but I would love if the esc menu was capitalized consistently, rather than having seemingly arbitrary casing for each word.

While it's nice to see you guys (finally) getting a new font to us as promised, I have to agree that it is almost more difficult to read (seems more blurred, though that might be due to comparing an upper-case character to a now lower-case character). Also, there are freely available fonts (e.g. Liberation Fonts or Deja Vu Font (in case of licensing issues with the first)) that are well designed and tested for readability/scalability.

I do like that I may now tell the difference between "0" and "O" and definitely love the (promised, but not tested) performance improvement. Big smile I am definitely tired of typing in one chat window only to have some mystical UI lag change my chat focus (yes, I have already filed a bug) so that I have to retype (or copy & paste) half of my sentence in my original window.

I should be at my work area, cleaning the arsenic out of an ion implanter so we all can all be playing Eve on our mobile devices. Instead, I am here, saying... Ze font, it is taller! I can see it! Thank you, CCP!

EPIC WIN!

Well deserved!

Seriously - great job. Much easier to read and I like the font! The font didn't take any time for me to get used to. I especially liked the ESC menu.

The font could be a tad more "spacier" but with that said I have never seen a truly "spacy" font sub Star Trek and that would look stupid. haha

So...with that said....

ANOTHER EPIC WIN FOR TEAM BFF (THE BEST DEV TEAM IN EVE)!
