Not trying to make this into a political thing, even though it concerns one of the US president candidates, but do people in the US really believe this sort of nonsense?

I had to watch that twice just to be sure. The levels of stupid coming out of that mans mouth just made the IQ of the entire planet to go down.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euthanasia_in_the_Netherlands

Euthanasia in the Netherlands is regulated by the "Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Review Procedures) Act" from 2002. It states that euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide are not punishable if the attending physician acts in accordance with criteria of due care.[1] These criteria concern the patient's request, the patient's suffering (unbearable and hopeless), the information provided to the patient, the presence of reasonable alternatives, consultation of another physician and the applied method of ending life.[1] To demonstrate their compliance, the Act requires physicians to report euthanasia to a review committee.[1]

To be fair, "... euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide are not punishable if the attending physician acts in accordance with criteria of due care." is pretty creepy.

edit: Ok, it's only creepy if you take that line out of context, embellish it, and twist it to drum up support from your political base. Welcome to politics.

Here's what actually happens in Holland.

If someone has an illness that's not curable and makes life "unbearable" one can ask for help with euthanasia, but only if that person has a sound mind and knows exactly what he's asking for (no cases of Alzheimer for instance). This means that there'll be a weighing and discussion on what "unbearable" really means and if the patient is actually "of sound mind" for every case and even then, many doctors will decline help based on personal beliefs or because they feel that there's still options open.

In other words; nothing wrong, no "please don't kill me" bracelets or involuntary euthanasia. This is nothing else but fcking moronic stupidity on Santorum's part.

It's better to say that Santorum's facts are completely utterly and wrong instead of calling him stupid. If he can twist the story to be about euthanasia, and use it emphasize his religious objection to euthanasia thereby demonstrating his evangelical credentials, then it may help him to win further support in the Republican primaries in order to defeat his rival Mitt Romney and win the GOP nomination. Which isn't stupid.

Nope I'd pretty much call that stupid, unless ofcourse US citizens actually gobble that **** up. In which case... you should have mandatory euthanasia over there.

sometimes , just a few times those american politicians scare me
Their lack of knowledge about other cultures and countries alone scares me

I feel pitty for the american voters so little choice

Beside the Netherlands aren't the only country in the world where Euthanasia has been taken out of criminal law
and as far i know the text is almost indentical as the dutch version
so this is permanence

Our political system has become such a joke.

I so badly want to vote for a good Republican, but we haven't had one of those in a very long time.

Looks like I'm going Libertarian again.

To be fair, very few Europeans know much about American culture. They know the caricatured version they get from our television filtered through their own culture's perception of us. We have dozens of distinct cultures, and our politicians need to understand THOSE first.

Sure, I'll give you that. But any country where clowns like this guy actually have a chance to become president is already a caricature.

And Newt Gingrich wants poor children to work as child laborers.

I wonder why anyone takes the US elections serious anymore. Ignoring all the other things about the US politics, the candidates are outright insane, fit for naught but a freak show.

Except that's not what New said/meant: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/dec/14/mitt-romney/romney-gingrich-wants-scrap-child-labor-laws/

So what does it mean when the voters incorrectly ascribe stupid/insane things to the politicians...? Twisted

For european tears, its the only reason to pay attention to politics. Suppose life is suppose to be about smoking pot and getting rid of the people who suck through euthanasia. The Dutch have blood on their wooden boots, and those wind mills are powered by rivers of blood as well.

The republicans candidates are just being republican. Putin is almost funner to watch then them.

But if Barack can get a good platform or so, propably vote for him.

(Besides the how to tax rich or to tax them has to be solved maybe, before big time campaigning can begin)

. . .unfortunately, we Americans also get that same thing. Hence Americans who know very little about actual American History or various cultures in our country, but know a whole lot about who can sing on American Idol, etc.

Politics is much like religion (at least in the U.S.). Charismatic people influence stupid people based on misinformation that coincides with what stupid people believe, convincing stupid people to give the charismatic person more power.

This is one of the reasons why I don't vote republican. You can argue all day that the parties are essentially the same in some ways, but when it comes to fear mongering and twisting of information, republican politicians really just love to do it to further their own misguided goals...

"Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law, he has a brother who is a known homo sapiens,[9] and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper, before his marriage, habitually practiced celibacy."

The statement was a hoax but kinda reminds me of the Santorum campaign.
