How is watching your ship on autopilot for 4 hours playing a game ? I could be doing something more worthwhile in that time. OR the damn autopilot could remember the route the next time and set the warp to those gates to 0. Or if the people at CCP are feeling a little more sadistic, they could give us the option of making bookmarks and chaining them together for the autopilot to follow. And wouldn't it make sense ? That when you visit the same gate the second time you know where to park your ship ?
God! I hate the ignorance of people who can only think of satisfying their pride.

something worthwile like digging a useless thread out of its grave? maybe you should switch to a different game, eve obviously isnt for you. Uhh i know, join a game where you can play a necromancer, that would fit you. Oh and maybe one where you dont lose all your stuff if you are afk, that would be good for you too i guess. You should try Age of Conan, that might me your game. Well if thats too much pvp you can also just go back to WoW

Pull out your calculators and figure how many months you've spent over the past five to seven years staring at the screen as your ship approaches gate after gate after gate. Human nature inclines in the direction of "doing it automatically so I can make a sandwich while I wait". If you've done it "this" way for years, doing it "that" way can't really be called lazy.

However, be that as it may, how this directly affects gameplay involves so many variables one can't really count the ways. As was mentioned about traveling in MMOs, that quality of redundancy over time has led to the "dungeon finder" tool, which not only allows you to find groups, but also insta-sends you to the point of contact taking travel completely out of the picture. The DF tool is becoming quite prolific in MMOs.

I don't want to do it. But, I don't want it done for me. It's an agonizing way to spend time nowadays, but if I had it, I'd use it and the sheer size of New Eden would instantly disappear. That has a self-defeating aspect to it. Mainly, though, I wouldn't disparage someone for suggesting it. It's only natural, unless you're brain dead, and I'm sure we agree post flamers are brain dead.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

Roughly 0 time.

When I AP something, it's because I am not looking at my EvE client. Either I'm looking at porn with the client minimized, or I'm nowhere near the computer. If I'm at the keyboard, I'm not APing.

Absolutely not. Douchebags autopilot all the time and need to die for it.

Actually, I'd be in favour of it in the sense that it's more realistic from a "lore" point of view (it's supposed to be a super-advanced civilization after all).

But if it were implemented, there would have to be a counter to it - i.e. the ability to shut off someone's autopilot. And I think that would be counterproductive because then people who had previously worked legitimately (i.e. been alert and used the tools available) would be penalized if their autopilot could be knocked out at any time.

So on the whole, no.

There are lots of things they could do in EVE to make it more "realistic" in lore terms (i.e. as I said, to represent a super-advanced civilization), but lots of them would be so open to abuse in a game that works in a context of internet anonymity that it's simply not feasible to implement them.

Devs have to balance "game" and "sim" in any MMO, and while "sim" definitely has some importance, usually it has to be weighted more towards "game".

After all, if it were truly a sim, you would almost certainly be doing nearly everything with "macros" Smile (with AI, bots and drones doing most of your dirty work - mining, manufacturing, fighting, etc.).

It isn't. Why are you using the autopilot while watching the screen? If you're there, fly it manually and reap the benefits.

As for doing something worth-while, you already can: talk on TS/Vent; troll in local; adjust your buy and sell orders; fiddle with your PI and industry; study the market for new trading routes; take note of the camps and who's in them for future reference…

If you choose to do nothing, and then find that this choice is boring, then it's not really the game's fault, now is it?

I'm all for autopilot wtz if, and only if, it includes the following:

-High-sec only
-Your destination is somehow displayed in 'show info'
-Upon arriving at the destination your ship is immobile for 50% of the time you saved (the game will calculate the time it would have taken to slowboat to each gate along the way and divides that total by 2)

Thus, you have a quicker trip, but gankers still can get a shot at you. Same result, but saves everyone some time.

No good deed goes unpunished

Sentence structure — it's a foreign concept to you, I take it?

Anyway, no. The thing is just that for every actual troll, there are ten idiots who genuinely believe the same thing, so it's much easier and far more efficient to just deal with trolls as if they were part of those idiots, rather than trying to separate the two. Even if the person is trolling, you might actually accidentally teach the idiots something that might make them slightly less idiotic…

If they implemented this, the only thing that would save the constantly immobilized freighter would be it's absurdly high structure HP as you would likely spend quite some time floating after a long trip.

Probably because most of them realise that for a "your convenience" change like that; there is an impact on the wider game that is less than desirable. In other words; they consider the game as a whole which is a good thing.

Edit:
I would support a mechanism like this if there was some penalty involved. For example, a wide range, gate-linked disruption module that would render a ship using an autopilot feature helpless while the pirates took it apart. Or something similar. You can't take a benefit without an associated penalty in a game like this.

Everyone that runs transport missions or hauls regularly already uses a macro/bot that just selects warp to 0 along the route. So in reality it wouldn't change anything, except the few players who haven't found said macros yet. (I do still occasionally see autopiloting freighters, so some haven't found them yet.)

definately, auto-pilot should be warp to zero.

also, auto-pilot should be able to do more than just warp.

add features like:

auto-mine
auto-mission
auto-belthunting
auto-research
auto-manufacture
auto-PI
auto-MoonGooPOS
auto-tradingforprofit
auto-pvp
auto-greifnewbies
auto-hunt&suicidefreightersinhighsec
auto-smacktalkinlocal

it's totally unfair that couriers get this automation, but other professions do not. implement now! It's bad enough we have to pay for the game, but we're expected to play it too?!?!!

^^ This is THE point. You want to change the game mechanic out of laziness and nothing else. Even I will admit there would be times where a WTZ autopilot out be wonderful (flying a Fenrir comes to mind) but if it were permitted it would just promote more laziness. Ships like the Tornado are good for dealing with people not wanting to be at the keyboard, and even I think those are overpowered.

Recently someone got popped with 15 PLEX in their cargo in an unarmored industrial because they were on autopilot and all I can say is 'too bad, so sad'. You were lazy and you just lost your cargo. You want to be 'safe'? Stay at the keyboard.

I dont know.. sitting in-front of computer playing computer game... its kind of lazy behavior you know..
Its not rocket science and hard labor .. its leisure time..

I like to have an autopilot race with my Alt to see who wins.

Both set the same destination in the same ship then Autopilot at the same time and see who wins.

Not only do both of my Avatars get to their destinations BUT I get to make dinner and watch (what is frankly the most awesomesauceness race) a race. Its a win Win WIN. Then at the end one of my accounts wins a free muffin
