Fictional scenario

I'm a noob, I know nada , I just watched CCP new video

Part 1 - How to die in high sec

I'm out in my shiney new ship in high sec, I warp to a belt and see some dudes trying to gank a mining barge so I lock and load and blast away, Concord repond ......... it doesn't end well ...... Roll

Local : WTF I followed the vids advice I got killed what happened
Local : Lolz , that sort of stuff goes on in null sec

Part 2 - How to die in low sec

I'm out in my shiney ship heading for the promised land of PvP, I head out of high sec into low sec heading for null sec. I see lots of ships just floating around at one of the gates ......... it doesn't end well ....... Roll

Local : WTF I followed the vids advice I got killed in low sec what happened?
Local : Lolz you need to scout your route

Part 3 - How to die in Null sec

I'm out in my shiney ship, dodging gate camps on the way , I finally arrive in low sec, I pop up in the local of the tear starved inhabitants .............. it doesn't end well. ...... Roll

Local : WTF I followed the vids advice I got killed in null sec what happened?

Player goes on to becoming a new nul sec leader.

Fictional scenario #3
"WoW is getting dated, oh a space mmo with pretty avatars! I CANT GET ANYWERE BECAUSE I KEEP DIEING WITH EVERY BUTTON I PRESS!"
Player either quits at the start, or rage quits after ending up losing a multi billion isk plex bought lvl 4 ship to a gank.

Wonder what kind of player mentality the OPs scenario fits.

Just start new character and show him buying skillbooks and watching skill queue for 6 months long. Finally undocks, but its server downtime.

Unfortunately the only way a noob can PvP in this game solo seems to either be through covert ops and smart bombs, there are gate camps at each major chokepoint towards 0.0 space, to get past them you need to use a shuttle/pod, if you want PvP I would suggest going for low sec since the odds will be fairer against you thanks to the turrets at the stargates that 0.0 players really seem to hate for some reason.

Sorry, but that's not incompetence, that's called imbalance and it's about time you lot suck up and admit to it, high sec was his own fault but a noob player can only properly get around in low sec or 0.0 is through shuttles/pods/cloaked, anything else is suicide on your own.

Please don't give bad advice to new players.

A fast frigate (I recommend the Vigil) with a speed fit including a microwarp drive and a cloak will get you past all but the most determined gate camps.

Bolded the part of your post that makes sense.

Also your fictional character didn't follow the advie of local in part 2, as in needing in a scout. If the character in your story would have followed local's advice and started looking around for a scout maybe on the forums in the recruitment area he may have happened upon a decent corp willing to teach him a few things to improve his experience.

He probably could of asked in local if someone could help explain things a bit, and someone probably would have scammed him. Then after scamming him and realizing he was an honest noob many times those people will tell you what you did wrong. Then he woulda known better.

As far as I can tell your fictional character just isn't cut out for eve.

This game isn't very friendly to solo play - being solo ranges from boring (in highsec) to mostly running away from everything (in lowsec) to suicidal unless you're really damn good (in nullsec). It's always been that way and probably always will - and the more I see the 'traditional' MMOs become single-player games with sub fees the less I think of the focus on grouping as a problem.

The shock of going from "You're a big damn hero because all the NPCs say so and you can smite anything you run across with ease and nothing bad could ever possibly happen!" to "Welcome to New Eden, where nobody including the NPCs give two craps about you and you can actually lose stuff if you screw up but you're free to do pretty much whatever you want" has always been the biggest hurdle for new players, and I don't think any amount of polishing up tutorials will really do anything about it - EvE is something you either understand and enjoy or you don't pretty quickly, and again it's always been that way.

(note that grouping in this sense means being in a decent corp and having decent blues, not in a fleet 100% of the time, though that may or may not be your cup of tea)

So this fictional noob found the Youtube video channel; watched the promo videos and then trained enough skill points to get shiny ships and feel they're not going to be obliterated by the first, week-old player they encounter. They died three times in succession across a wide range of security rankings.

And not once in that time they sought out advise on the forum, in new player help or from other players or even tried to look for a corporation?

They JUST watched the Youtube videos and had that guide them?

Well no.

I just don't buy that as a realistic player experience for the kind of player that is suited to EVE Online. It might be the way players of World of Warcraft or Hello Kitty Online approach their game; but it's not going to work for EVE Online. And if ******* well should not work that way for EVE Online.

These "Oh ****, there is PvP in a PvP game! How can that work?!?" threads are really, really, really, really getting tired now.

Isn't the point more that it's kind of false advertising? The whole point of a sandbox is that you start out as a schlub, and in EVE you are a mere worm until you get some skills, get taken under peoples' wings, etc., etc. - i.e. until you've invested some time in CCP's magnificently well-disguised timesink.

This is totally unlike themepark MMOs where you're the Big Hero, the centre of attention (along with 11 million others of course :) ) from the beginning.

Yet sometimes the promo videos present the idea that you're the Big Hero just like in other MMOs.

More "realistic" promo videos would show something more like someone working their way up the ranks, taking time, etc., etc.

That's what the OP seemed to be suggesting to me anyway.

All the press I'd seen about EVE Online prior to joining was that it is cold, harsh and brutal. The Guiding Hand Social Club event. The billions stolen. The intrigue, the backstabbing, the fights. Even that rather amusing learning curve graph that did the rounds a few years back.

You are. You're already a cut above the mortals, being an immortal capsuleer. But, like in any other MMO, you do not start off as the top-dog. You need to work your way up to it. It is no different in EVE and I suspect the type of player that comes to any MMO expecting to be the Big Hero immediately has never played a single video game in their lives.

The Butterfly Effect video show-cases that very well. The new Awakening one suggests that you will die several times. Realistically the videos portray New Eden and all the aspects of it. I don't see that as false advertising unless a player chooses to interpret it as such.

1) I get around just fine in Null in larger ships. Sometimes it's because I scout my route. Other times it's due to other forms of knowing what I'm doing.

2) Where's the imbalance? I go out with my friends to protect our space and bring overwhelming firepower to do so, and some spy shows up without being remotely prepared, of course we're going to win. The cost of a camp like that is that if we do something wrong, someone can surprise us with a large fleet and massacre us.

There should just be a message box that pops up the second you load a new character for the first time that explains what the system security scores mean and what happens when you misbehave in 0.5 and up. You'll still get people who "derp, tdlr man" but at least you can say it was there.

The adverts for the game love to show how much sandboxery goes on (and it does). But they still have a ways to go before they show you how to dodge the minefield in your way.

No. I can see why you want that; but it is pandering to the wrong type of player for EVE Online. If somebody is incapable of doing even cursory research or up-skilling; they will not be a good fit for EVE Online except as prey.

There should be a tutorial detailing the difference between security systems. Maybe even get the blown up by CONCORD to show that is what happens to bad people in highsec and maybe get shot at by gate guns to show the big difference between highsec and lowsec.

Not all gates into null are camped. People just aren't that bored to camp everything 24/7. It's fairly easy to find a route in, bu it does help to scout.

I'll counter the OP's fictional scenario, with a real one:

* Player (me) reads up about EVE Online on mmorpg.com. Joins the game with then intention to be a thief, pirate, scammer, corp thief, any kind of low life scum (as the game is depicted to be home for that kind of gameplay, in a harsh dark world). Start the game by doing contract scams and stealing from cans in highsec.
* Managing to **** off the locals, who scramble some 200 total angry guys perma-camping this player in stations.

..but unlike the OP's fictional scenario, this story has a good end:

* Player learns to pick your fights, not going up against blobs, not pissing in your own backyard, not assuming industrialists are defenseless etc.. - bad. Player learn a lesson and develop into a (hopefully) smarter player.
* Player realises that cooperating with industrialists, even for a thief and combat character, might have it's benefits.
* After seing his brother getting shot down in highsec, he also realises there's no real 'safe' in this game, just like guides described this game, but also that there is CONCORD in certain security space.

TL;DR - If CCP stopped dumbing this game down to WoW in space, maybe we'd get players of the real caliber who actually wants to play EVE Online, not shape this into something it isn't. And maybe crybabies like the OP would stick to a family friendly mmo instead.

AFK-cloaking in a system near you.
