Mining should be salvage on rocks

Had this idea on another thread.

You're shooting off bits of rock from an asteroid using a laser, and pulling it towards your ship using a tractor beam. Sound familiar? Dunno about ice and clouds and stuff because I've never done that, but the mechanics behind mining rocks are awfully similar to the mechanics behind salvage, except they use different modules.

I understand CCPs desire to unneccessarily complicate things in order to give the player things to do, but to maintain a consistent internal logic, salvaging and mining should be amalgamated, along with weaponising tractors and salvagers.

I am not sure why you want this added to the game, but i very much doubt you would be able to salvage usefull items if you continually bombard a wreck with a lazer.

There is also the point that if your super one turret that can mine, salvage and be used as a weapon, you are seriously simplifying the game.

The idea is that CCP makes this game unneccessarily complicated in order to give the players something to do. For the sake of logical realism, if you had a real-life spaceship then your turret WOULD have multiple functions, cos the cost/benefit ratio of such dramatic spacialisation would be too low. OK, maybe you would need to fit modifiers to it (aka crystals etc) to perform individualised functions, but it's not simplifying when you're cleaning out unneccessary clutter.

Salvage = chance based
Mining = continually pulling in rock until you shut off the laser (or the rock pops).

Furthermore, the type of specialisation that we see in EVE is because we've passed the point of needing "all in one" modules, and the added efficiencies of speciality modules outweigh the benefits of having all-in-one.

edit ... durr, can't spell.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

I definitely don't want mining to be chance based.

But I totally support the duel role of mining lasers as weapons. Continuous beam laser turrets with very high damage split evenly between all four damage type and with very low tracking. For modulated mining lasers, frequency crystals can be made to double the damage of any two damage types while reducing the damage of the other two types by half.
