At least you managed to reach the airstrip. I always ended up being ripped out of the sky like an untanked Machinaw getting sodomized by Catalysts.

I've found several tactics for shaking bogies that tend to work pretty well. (p.s. I don't know aviator terms so pleasecdon't hose me for mistakes)

#1. Quickly pull into a 60 d climb and cut power. Your sudden deceleration will more often than not cause the bogey to overshoot you from below effectively putting you behind him. After that it's just a matter of catching up and getting the shot. A major downside however is that sometimes the bogies manage to stay on your tail which quickly becomes literal.

#2. Reduce engine power and use your Rudder and aileron controls to perform a sweeping bowl maneuver under his gun fire which again will create enough friction to cause the bogey to pass you. This way allows you to regain speed faster than option one, however it still keeps you in the line of fire longer.

#3. Kiss the ground. I've noticed that the computer will only go so low, so if you go just a little lower they tend to break off and go after another target. I really do mean to kiss the ground as in being as little as 5 meters from death at high speed. One wrong move and you quickly become a fireball. This is the downside, you are very limited in any kind of maneuver until you pull up and get back into the fight, which sometimes take a while when all the planes are 2000 m up.

I personally love this flight sim and I like starting in all kinds of situations. My 2 favorite is Okinawa against 4 flights of zero's while I'm usually either in a P-61, P-63, or P-47. Usually 2 flights are sitting on the runway waiting to taxi and I try to dive right through AA fire to strafe the lot of the before they take off. Many times I either get a direct hit and explode or I don't pull up in time and I wipe out an entire row of planes with my fiery corpse.
My other favorite is usually any map where I put myself on defense with scramble so I have to get my plane started and in the air while already being shot at. It s fun as hell to barely be lifting off and suddenly seeing a strafe right over your featherybird-pit (yeah take that ccp).

It's bandits, bogeys are unknown aircraft. The guy trying to blow you out of the sky is a bandit Blink (no hate here!)

Ah, IL-2. That game would have been a lot more fun if they'd at least attempted to hide the fact that the AI cheats.

Also, Mosquito > all. So what if I'm trying to dogfight in a bomber, I'm faster than your silly little fighter and I've got four 20mm cannons, four machine guns, and enough ammo to shoot down your whole squadron. Oh yeah, and they're all center-mounted so pesky little details like "convergence" are something for pilots of lesser planes to worry about.

there was a combat flight simulator game also, i loved that
the plane damage was awesome, you could lose a wing, tail your pilot could be shot, parachutes malfunctioned too iirc...

it was hard to play though and too complicated to just go dogfight

so true , AI planes never ran out of ammo , AI pilots never suffered from blackouts and the AI planes knew exactly where you are on the map even if you were hugging the ground over friendly terrotory on the other side of the map
But still a great sim were you needed all your skills just to survive
I still fondly remember the time i was flying my little Il 16 and had 4 BF 109 s on my tail eventually i ran out of fuel but damn that was exciting
Still my all time favorite was the P 36Airacobra in soviet service , not a easy plane to hanfle in tight situation but once you knew how far you can take your plane and how to aim that big monster of a 30 mm cannon you could one shot any plane including light or med bombers
No wonder the soviets loved that plane and it was the favorite plane of so many soviet WWII aces
so this is permanence
