I've stated that I intend to play devils advocate, avoid 'party line' votes and represent what's best for Eve support by the scientific method. So I've decided to share some political analysis with all CSM candidates regarding the perception of Eve on twitter. As it happens my day job allows me access to the entire history of twitter, and I took it upon myself to analyze discussion around Eve online by tracking people using the #eveonline and #tweetfleet hashtags. Not only did the tweets get analyzed, but any articles that were linked were scraped into the system to enhance the context.

In particular, I performed sentiment analysis using an in house system we've used to track political candidates, businesses and other entities which inspire support or raging - it will surprise very few of you when you look at the graph below:

Chart Of Sentiment vs Time for #eveonline & #tweetfleet

You can see two dips where people get mad about Eve, in the autumns of 2010 and 2011, in both cases CCP addressed some nagging gameplay issues in the winter expansion.

If I am elected to CSM7 I will make it my top priority to ensure that there will be no need for such anger in Autumn 2012

The sentiment analysis system has to be tweaked a little for Eve, for example fighting, combat and killing are not necessarily bad, furthermore, tweets from CCP employees are treated specially, with their coments being largely ignored, unless other users express approval or dislike for their posts.

We can also pull out trends, things that make people happy & sad. This does appear to be noisy, but pulling out some of the most interesting ones in no particular order.

Good things:
'Eve, 'Mynxee', 'Fanfest', 'Tournament', 'Tornado', 'Apocrypha', 'Incursion', 'Logistics', 'Rifter', 'Minmatar'

Bad Things:
'Drake', 'CCP', 'Hilmar', 'Monocle', 'Hybrids', 'Proliferation', 'Aurum', 'Blob', 'Vampire'

This is a simple plot, minmatar scores highly because people like their ships, hybrids scored low because people kept complaining that CCP hadn't done anything useful, Hilmar was on the list because people were mad at him. I'm still working on multidimensional analysis of sentiment, it's not an easy problem to do right.
