ive been playing around a little bit with exploration and scanning down cosmic signatures, and i have a few basic questions. firstly, i will list my skills and equipment im doing it with -

astrometric 4
astrometric rangefinding 2
astrometric pinpointing 2
astrometric acquisition 2

probe
core probe launcher 1
core probe scanner 1

i am able to scan a system with max range on probes and find a few results. im also able to single out a result and scan it down to 100% so i can bookmark and enter the site.

my quesions are -

i am not showing what type of site it is until i scan the signature to 100% - am i overlooking something? i would like to know what type of site it is earlier in the scan process...

if a signature is a complex, how do i know? and how do i know if it is a 1/10 or a 3/10 complex?

The type of site will show at 25% (Unknown, Ladar, Magnetometric, Radar, Gravimetric) and the name of the specific site will show up at 75%. Unknown are WHs and combat sites, Ladar are gas sites, Mag are archaeology/salvage sites, Radar are hacking sites, and Grav are mining sites.

Once you know the site's name, you can Google it to find out what it is exactly, you tend to learn them and remember them as you get more experienced. For DED sites, the x/10 ones, once you start warping to it there will be a little text box that pops up and it will say x/10 in there if it's a DED site.

You should take notes during probing on various types of signals and their initial strength and in time you will get the knowledge on your own. Also, there are good probing tutorials around, just google for them.

Aside: note that, in addition to those other skills you listed, your scanning ability will increase by training Minmatar Frigate as well, since you are using a minmatar scout ship that gets a bonus to probe strength per level.

Other things you can do as you move along in Eve which will make scanning much easier:

Things you can train to help:
-Train Astrometric pinpointing to level 4 (reduces maximum scan resolution deviation by 10% per level)
-Train Astrometric Rangefinding to level 4 (increases maximum probe scan strength by 10% per level)

Things you can buy to help:
-If you find yourself making a specific ship for probing, throw on a couple Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade rigs. They increase probe scan strength by 10% per rig, however due to the rigs calibration, you can generally only fit two on a Frigate, leaving the 3rd rig slot unusable.
-Sisters Core Scanner Probes (+10% to probe scan strength)

That should help you scan a few more sites down to 100% and make doing so a little easier. The Sisters scanner probes and gravity capacitors are not an absolute "must have", but if you have the extra isk, every bit helps. Training the skills mentioned above to level 5 takes quite some time, and I'd only suggest it if you have nothing else you want to train. At the very least, get them to level 3
