Modelling Eve Planets

Hi all,

If anyone has any clue how to go about modelling eve's planets in a 3d package I'd love to hear.
The textures in the stuff files are mostly mapped onto uv's in the normal manner apart from the most imporant, the diffuse layer.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciatted.

Regards,
T'amber

Hi T'amber,

First, I'm posting to that topic because I want to follow it.

Second, I played a lot with ships, stations and so on, but never had a look at planets. Now that I did, I am not sure about what you question means.

Do you mean you do not know how to apply the diffuse textures, or that you can not find the diffuse textures ?

Because I had a look in res\dx9\model\worldobject\planet and I found loads of things (height maps, city lights, clouds and so on), but nothing looking close to a diffuse map (but I have a retinal detachment right now, which can explain that Big smile)

Found some in res\texture\planet though, but they are limited in terms of resolution (small) and kind of planet (gas, cloud and moon).

I agree with you on the UV mapping, that seems to fit best compared to spherical

Did you find diffuses and if yes, can I ask you where ?

Cheers

PS : subsidiary question : I found no specific forum section for 3D and graphic related stuff. Is there one ? Or will you suggest to create one ?

All the files are in the same folder for each planet (the ones you're obviously looking at) including the diffuse map.
I think that small diffuse texture (the little coloured one) is applied using some unknown or abnormal UV or mapping method while the other textures are done as per normal. I'll have a look in the .red files and see if theres a clue there.

edit- its over my head :|

I'd love to have a 3D graphics related section. Last week I posted this: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=68179&find=unread but of course, 0 replies.

Hi Cave Lord,

Shame on me, my EvE Forum bookmark points directly to the techno Lab section, and I rarely take the time to read all the rest... or I would have replied to you Big smile

I too would love to have a dedicated section for CG and 3D. One place where to find all resources, links, tutorials and so on.

I feel there is a interesting community there that could express itself valuably on one dedicated channel.

Let's wait and see, I wrote our "Rastaman" about that matter Big smile

Cheers

Nathan
