What exactly happened to Yulai? I haven't played long enough to have heard of it before. The other thread mentions that the "highway" system was removed/destroyed?

Just curious. =)

The highway system was actually before my time. But from what I understand, it was essentially a set of stargates which connected each of the 4 empire capital systems to Yulai, which acted as a cetral hub. This "highway system" was introduced because EVE didn't have enough players at the time to fill up all of the space. The highway system made the universe "small"

Because Yulai was just a few short jumps from each of the 4 empires, all of the trade was focused in that system. Eventually EVE's playerbase grew to a point where CCP decided that the highway system wasn't needed anymore and they removed it.

This was the deathblow to Yulai, and Jita became the new Yulai.

The OP is possibly referencing an old argument that EVE players would have on the forums, back when lag in Jita was an issue (trust me, you guys have it sooooooo easy right now). Because the lag was so bad in Jita, people would get trapped in there on sundays - unable to even log in. Likewise, people would be unable to jump into JIta and even if they WERE in the system, the lag was so horrible that every activity would take several seconds to several minutes for the server to respond to.

The argument was over whether CCP should "kill" Jita or not due to the horrendous lag. Intelligent people referenced to how CCP already did that once with Yulai, and people simply moved to Jita once Yulai was killed. They argued that no matter how many times CCP "killed" a trade hub, a new one would rise to take it's place - meaning that CCP would be fighting a losing battle, similar to how fleet fights and lag work. Thus the argument was that killing Jita would be a pointless endeavor.

There you go, more EVE history than you ever wanted to know about.
