I agree with the op. It's pretty depressing how often people here mock those with this disability. It tends to disprove the often repeated claim that "I am just ******* in game, not in real life."

The real problem with discrimination against autists is that autism is heavily used as an excuse by socially akward douchebags for saying incredible stupid stuff. A perfect defense, basically it comes down to "I can say whatever I want and if you respond to it in a negative way you are fascist and discriminating me, so you better shut up." You should seriously blame THOSE people, they are much more discriminating against any real autists than anyone else.
And if you don't like my post, I will report you, 'cos I am a jew and not liking my posts is clearly discriminating.

Oh, edit: self diagnosed jew, of course Blink

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Its a valid point if someone is being stupid and deliberatley using it as a social loophole as you suggest, but it still doesn't justify the use of the kind of slurs of association against disadvantaged groups.

In this sense you shouldn't justify your actions on the basis of someones else's and you should be responsible for your own actions and values.

This is a good point of logic.

But I just don't see many people claiming what Zimmy says they claim. I just don't see many people justifying what they say by saying "well I have autism so thats why I said that."

I see a considerable amount of people in the eve community mocking people who have the condition. It does indeed suggest to me that the eve community may in fact have a higher ratio of "real life assholes" than the population at large. And the claim that the eve community is just pretending to be assholes in the game, is not really true.

Just my 2 cents.

I just hope I'm not the only one who is perverely amused by the idea of making fun of people who act like nerds in the context of an internet spaceship game. We're all nerds, folks. Looking down on other nerds for being even more socially 'stunted' is funny, but ... I forgot where I was going with this.

The CSM is an advocacy group based on persuasion. Someone on the Autism spectrum, or god-forbid self-diagnosing themselves, has no place on the group, since the entire point is being able to understand social cues and get policies through.

Since:
-The current estimates are that 1 in 91 people are on the autistic spectrum; and
-Four times more males are on the spectrum than females; and
-As a wild guess, over 90% of EVE players are males; and
-People on the autistic spectrum tend to be involved in computers and MMOs even more than the regular sedentary male; and
-Not a few EVE players have mentioned being diagnosed as on the autistic spectrum (including Asperger's); then
-We can pretty safely assume that a pretty significant portion of the EVE player base is on the spectrum.

So why shouldn't a person on the spectrum be on the CSM? He/she would be representing significant sector of the player base. Or is it that the CSM members are more concerned about the interpersonal politics (getting one's policy through) than about representing us the players? I understand that interpersonal maneuvering is probably a big part of getting things done in the CSM. But if an autist/aspie member had a good point, the other members wouldn't give it a fair listen and take it into account? If that's the case, CSM isn't representing the 45,000+ players, it's just jive b.s. of CSM members trying to push their personal agendae through. We'd be better off if CCP instead spent the money on reading "Give Me Your Little Things" and running good, detailed opinion polls.

Ah yes, the affirmative action argument. Did you know quadriplegics live in houses? Construction workers build houses. So why shouldn't we have a quadriplegic construction worker?

Well, OK. But that's not at all what I said. Nothing in there about affirmative action.

Edit: Ah wait, maybe you're saying that people on the spectrum are intellectually impaired. Some are, some aren't, some small percentage are exceptionally intelligent. The same as in the typically developing population. It's not an intellectual impairment, it's a preference for emphasizing certain of the brain for processing information and making decisions. If somebody is on the spectrum and playing EVE and posting on the forums, they're not intellectually impaired. They know the game and all it's details as well or better than anybody else. It's only the social part that could be a drawback. So if the CSM is about giving feedback on game functions and possible improvements, why couldn't an autist/aspie do that as well as anybody else? But if the CSM is just about politics and manipulating opinion, then you're right. Somebody on the spectrum would probably be at a disadvantage.

Edit: Missed your edit ^^ but gonna post anyway.

Okay, all meanness aside, nobody's talking about intellectual impairment. Having someone on the autism spectrum be part of the CSM is like having a quadriplegic lion tamer. Not only will he not be able to tame the lions, but he will quite likely get eaten alive in the process. I suggest spending some time reading the blogs and commentary of the current CSM members to get a sense of the degree to which they like to troll each other. In spite of all that, they get things done, because they know how to laugh off a troll and move on.

That's one reason I heartily endorse sending as much of the current crew back (minus Darius III) as possible. They oppose each other on lots of things but are still able to work together, and that's rare enough without social impairments in the mix.

Try playing WoW for a month. Compared to mainstream MMOs, the EVE community comes off as remarkably mature and well-mannered. Which is just the sad state of society, unfortunately.

So... I've noticed a common trend of attacking either Aspies/Autists, or more specifically often, "self-diagnosed aspies". Yes, we know it's the #1 self-diagnosed mental condition right now, because among the many many symptoms listed, it covers everything from being socially awkward, to a different thinking pattern, to the part of just being special, so it basically covers every teens' fantasy explanation for their problems. Yes, we know it has a funny name, if you choose to add an extra S, and respell the ending as "burgers". This is not news. It's also not very original.

I just wanted to ask if people ever considered how many people they might be insulting who are clinically diagnosed? Potentially by multiple specialists? Believe it or not, it wouldn't make it into the DSM if it wasn't for the fact that some people actually do have it. And some of us, might even be the folks backing you up in a fleet engagement, scouting out your next kill, or ensuring those corp ships end up at the POS you need them, when you need them.

People like *cough*Xenuria*cough* obviously have special needs of some sort. But it's a really shoddy excuse to throw around attacks on wide swaths of people. Try to narrow your insults, like insulting pedophiles! (Completely unrelated to the last sentence, I assure you!)

Also, as my "inb4", yes, I'm completely aware how much humiliation I just set myself up for in this thread. So, um... have fun.

Hmm.... Endless nasty trolling, is it? Survival of the snidest? A trollocracy doesn't sound like it would be so good at encouraging much creative discourse or brilliant new insights. Have a novel new idea? Thanks for putting up the fat juicy target-- please enjoy some shots coming from all sides. End of discourse, move on to lulz. Ah well, probably best for autists/aspies and normies alike to leave it to the mean immatures and enjoy life doing something else.
