How Best to Draw Aggro?

Flying a droneboat in losec exploration (Pilgrim).

What is the best way to draw aggro to protect the drones? (A gun in the highs?)

Will you draw aggro merely by shooting at an NPC, even if you do not hit? Or, Must you be within range of the weapon you are firing?

Will using a target painter draw aggro?

1. Any aggressive module (point, civilian gun, TP, damp, ECM, etc.)
2. Yes, just firing at the majority will aggro them. THere are a few that only aggro on distance however.
3. Yes.

Gun, TD, TP or just a Sentry Drone.

Drop Sentry (maybe 2 if you want), let it shoot at the rat until they fire back. As soon the Sentry have half shield, scoop it back in, wait a few seconds and the rats should target you. If you have a spare High for a repper you can let the sentry tank a little longer to let the rats come closer.

edit:
"aggro on distance" means, that some rats shoot at you as soon as you come within a certain amount of meters. Most rats have this kind of aggro-management, but most time the Player fire at them before he gehts into that range.

How far you are from the rat, some will only attack if you come within (for example) 20km, regardless of how much you shoot at them.

"aggro" is really simple in eve, if you do a hostile action or come into range they will target you.
Just make sure that all the rats are targeting you by activating any hostile module on them then launch the drones.
Only incursion rats and sleepers change target.

besides agroing on distance, you will find some rats on a "leash" of xKm from where they spawn if they get to taht max kKm they just reset.
