Torps in a c3.

Okay so....

I occasionally run c3 combat anoms with several ships. At minimum we run 4 target painters.

Most ships would fly within range for my torps.

Will I ever actually HIT the frigs? Will the torp damage (50% more dps ish) on the cruisers make up for the lack of dps (down from criuse missiles often times) be worth it? I dont want to go through all of the hassle of doing maths and trial runs....surely someone must have done this before, does this now, or vetoed this for good reason. Again we have ships to take care of the long range stuff but i was hoping since most of the ships are cruisers and frigs that maybe I could get a consensus. Again this discussion revolves around cruise missiles vs torps at the 4+tp range in c3 whs (sleepers).

i would say yes with all the tp's. also switching to javelin or faction variant will help a bit more. in general id still say youre better off with heavy missiles though

Agree with hath. My perspective is very small group, often solo, w-space ops.

I used TPs and torps for a while, via snake, and then dropped them for cruises ... and then dropped them for heavy missiles. Go figure, but I find HMs way better even against the large targets. When I get the four frigs crowding me it seems worthwhile swapping to precision HMs but furies easily take care of everything, including the frigs.

Since I work alone or in very small (two-ship) fleets I don’t get to much rely on the sleepers swapping targets. For me using those slots for tank and prop is way more important than the benefit that a painter provides, especially when I am operating in dangerous unknown space.

I found HMs to be similarly useful in C4 and, recently, in my first C5 site attempt ... although the extra range of cruises may be more useful for small-group ops on C4/5 systems.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

I preferred the range of cruises in C4s since some of the spawns would come up 70km away and it's no fun waiting around to either get in range or let them get in range.

Heavy Missiles are probably the most cost-effective and generally the most effective up through C3 though.

heavy missiles are best everywhere. a well skilled tengu pilot can shoot them easily at 100km, and the tengu is also the best wh pve ship in general. if you cant fly or afford one yet, bs like a raven can be a decent alternative, but only untill you can use tengu's.

you can use different set-ups then pure tengu, especially when adding logistics. mainly nightmares can be excellent in the higher classes.
