Have you ever had questions on the Eve backstory? Wanted to know why the Caldari hate the Gallente, or where Empress Jamyl came from? The Eve backstory is as complex as it is deep, and it can be incredibly difficult to really dig into the story if you're not sure where to start. Even with the help of the Eve Fiction Portal, it can be hard to know what to read to give you information on what you want to learn about.

To help those interested in the backstory, I've created the Eve Lore Primer, hosted by the ever gracious Seismic Stan over on the blog Freebooted. It's by no means intended to be a complete guide to the Eve lore and backstory (to do that, I'd literally just have to copy and paste all of the chronicles, short stories, and books from end to end!) Rather, I've tried to put together a general overview on the major subjects of interest to new players or those who might be interested in role playing. Each entry is cross-referenced with citations to the main eve lore, for those who are interested in digging deeper into Eve's background, while still giving enough background and information to let you hold your own in most conversations.

The primer, which tops out around 19,000 words last time I checked, has been split into 4 general parts. The first part, posted yesterday, deals with the beginnings of New Eden, including how New Eden came to be colonized as well as an introduction to the so-called lost civilizations of New Eden. Today, I covered the major empires in New Eden, including the Amarr Empire, the Minmatar Republic, the Gallente Federation, the Caldari State, as well as a brief introduction to CONCORD. Each of these posts looks at the history of the respective nation, gives some information on the social structure of that empire, and gives some general tips on role playing for those who are interested.

Over the next day or two, I'll also be posting information on the minor factions of New Eden, including the pirate factions as well as others that have played a major role in the lore (EDIT: Available here, here, and here). Finally, I'll end with an overview of the major technologies of New Eden (EDIT: Available here), as well as some miscellaneous information that doesn't quite fit in anywhere else (EDIT: Available here). When all of the posts are live, we'll also be offering a downloadable PDF to keep all the information in one place.

If anyone has any questions on the information I've posted, or what's some more information on things that I didn't cover in the guide, feel free to ask me here, send me a message in game, or leave a comment on the blogs themselves. Thanks!

This is a must read.

I am one who can not sit down and read for the sake of reading. Holding a book and seeing how much needs to be read sends me in to ADD. I have to have short, to the point, interesting quick reads. This is what Mark has provided.

If not for Mark writing this I would have never read any Eve lore. In fact, forget books. Even if in a digital format I can not stay focused long enough.

The point is: If a short attention span hard ass like myself can take the time to read this excellent work put forth by Mark and learn something I otherwise would not have even cared about you can too. And you should. I'm not a role player. But this series put forth really adds some richness surrounding the game. Read it. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the great feedback so far, everyone. I've been having a lot of fun put this together.

I just wanted to note that we just finished posting the information on most of the minor factions floating around in EVE. I tackle the Ammatar Mandate, Angel Cartel, Blood Raider Covenant, Equilibrium of Mankind, and Guristas in post 1. In post 2, I discuss the Intaki Syndicate, Intaki culture, InterBus, Khanid Kingdom, Mordu's Legion, ORE, and Rogue Drones. Finally, I discuss Sansha's Nation, the Serpentis, the Sisters of Eve, and the Society for Conscious Thought in post 3.

I'll be posting Part 4, dealing with technology and other miscellanea in the next day or two.

And, finally, for those interested in the technology of New Eden or various miscellaneous bits (in-game calendars, and languages, and wormholes, oh my!), the last part of the Lore Primer is up on Freebooted.
