I have a friend of mine just starting the game, and they want to fly gallente to begin with. I wanted to buy them all the important basic skills they'll need, but I don't remember what they are. I know the career trainers will give them some skills, but that there are a bunch of other basic stuff they leave out.

My question is, what is a list of skill books that I should get them to train up the basics? They'll probably do mostly PvE to start with, but might be able to get theim into PvP at some point.

a good place to start if your friend does go gallente, is all the gunnery support skills and then drone skills with the support skills to the drones. engineering and eletronics skills are always good... really you cant go too wrong with any support skills you give him to train.

My 2 isks:

By categories:

Drones:
drones, drone navigation, drone sharpshooting, drone interfacing, drone durability, gallente + minnie drone spec, combat drone operation and scout drone operation skills. This eventually gives T2 lights and mediums with decent supports + allows using drone link augmentor to postpone electronic warfare drone interfacing skill.

Electronics:
Cloaking is good to inject, electronics upgrades, long range targeting, signature analysis, survey (prereq for salvaging?), propulsion jamming. this gives starter targeting capabilities with ability to wield webs and scrams.

Engineering:
Energy grid upgrades, energy system operation, energy management. This gives solid starter for capacitor operating. For gallente shield skills can be somewhat postponed. Energy emission systems for noses and neuts.

Gunnery:
Controlled bursts, motion prediction, rapid firing, sharpshooter, surgical strike trajectory analysis, weapon upgrades (awu requires weapon upgrades 5 so i dont consider it starter skill) are the major support ones. add to the mix medium hybrids and its starter is set.

Industry:
Tbh id skip everything there for starter pilot. Those stuff can be done later.

Leadership:
Same, look industry. these can come later.

Mechanics:
Skills that eventually unlock full T2 armor tank + compensations to the taste and salvaging. So hull upgrades, repair systems, mechanics mainly. Jury rigging, drone rigging, hybrid rigging, armor rigging and astronautics rigging will unlock a rather hefty amount of most common rigs for gallente but if you can fly gallente yourself you can just rig the ships for him so he has less to train initially.

Missile launcher operation:
For gallente starter id skip everything for starter. That stuff can be done later.

Navigation:
Afterburner, evasive maneuvering, high speed maneuvering, warp drive operation. This should make both afterburnes and mocrowarp drives available. Just injecting the supports acceleration control and fuel conservation are good to inject.

Social:
See industry and leadership

Spaceship command:
For new player buy him gallente cruiser skillbook, possibly battlecruisers skillbook. This gives vexor + myrmidon. 2 friggin awesome starter ships that arent "that" skill intensive to fly in the beginning.

So long list but this should make easy gallente progreession path available as:
T1 frigs -> T1 cruiser -> 5 Drones -> BC (Myrmidon) -> T2 Tank -> Capacitor -> Targeting - > Propulsion mods -> T2 guns (id go with blasters)

After that id prefer going heavy assault cruisers for ishtar but your taste may vary and this should give decent starting capabilities.

I'm not trying to sound 'funny' but the best thing you could do is look at all the skills and read their descriptions. If you google skills you are uncertain about you can read in greater depth. Looking at certificates is also a good general guide. Knowing the skills will make you both better pilots.

To give you an answer you might like more, I can say it's helpful that your friend likes gallente as it means he can map for int & mem and focus on drones and 'support' skills initially. Not going too deep on a racial weapon at the start keeps him flexible and gives him time to learn what he likes.

Buy him basic cert skill books, cybernetics, and drones.

To add to what the last poster wrote.

Your friend will learn faster, if he reads the skills himself, and asks you to interpret the application.

Just boost him some ISK here and there and let him learn for himself. (Learning is half the fun) Don't over boost him his ISK either, though. The best EVE players are the ones who learn to be self sufficient at a very early stage.

"learning" skills, and train them, this is the list you need first, train them in order, to level 3.

Learning:
Learning
Analytical Mind
Instant Recall
Spacial Awareness
Iron Will
**************************************************************************************************************************************************

xxxxxxThese skills still useful ;) xxxxxxx

train these other skills in no particular order, maybe guns and missiles first, but you will need them all for basic modules and upgrades.

Gunnery:
Gunnery (to 3)
Small Hybrid Turret (to 3)
Weapons upgrades (to 1 to start)

Missiles:
Missile Launcher Operations (to 3)
Rockets (at least 1)

Navigation:
Navigation (2)
High Speed Menuvering (1)
Afterburner (1)

Mechanic:
Mechanic (1)
Hull upgrades (1)
Repair Syustems (1)

Engineering:
Engineering (1)
Shield Upgrade (1)
Energy Grid Upgrades (1)

Electronics:
Electronics (1)
Electronic Upgrades (1)

Drones
Drone Skills, can't remember the starters off the top of my head.

Science
Cybernetics - you will pick up an implant or two when rat hunting, especially if you do level 1 combat missions. higher level implants require higher level Cybernetics. Train to level 1 (about 8 mins), leave it there until you need to train it higher.

just open the certificates tab then go to plan certifcates.

Look at Core, Defence(Armor related + tactical shield manupilation), Drones and Gunnery/ hybrid for Gallente, get the skills to get them to standard allong with the skills of the desired ships.

Edit:
and ofcource start with Sience and Cybernetics -> get him some implants as well

Give you buddy a stack of isk.

Have them buy the cheapest skill books they can currently use until they almost run out of isk.

Inject them all train to 2-3.

This takes a very small investment of isk/time.

Result is a new toon with a lot more to play with to help decide what aspect of the game they want to focus on.

They will end up with a bunch of stuff you won't use much but it makes for an exciting first three days.

I'd use the Certification Planner. I'd get him Started on:
1. Gallente Military Soldier - Improved - Est. 32 Days on Non-Gallente Pilot. Lets you fly Gallente Frigs.
- This is Under the "Starting Professions" Certification Planning Tree. And Then...
2. Cruiser Hybrid Turrets - Basic & Gallente Cruiser IV - Est. 2 Days. Lets you fly Gallente Cruisers.

Certification is what I use to train empty Alts from scratch anyways.

Edit: Also, About 2 Million Isk will be needed for the skill books. Add another 10 million for ships and gear? They'll be all set.
