ps. it seems I only used 20-char passwords for my other 2 accounts, time to change them.

i change my passwords at least 4 times a month the reason for this my orginal eve chars were stolen by a friend and sold on ebay (i was talking a break from eve at the time and only knew because he fessed up and told me he sold his own as well and many of them are still being used to this day)
my own fault for using a really obv password that he knew i was using for everything from porn to e-mail
he was into hacking credit card fraud lots of ****** up **** i never made a fuss because i wanted as much distance from him as possible didn't wanted to be tainted by his bullshit.

so when i came back to eve i while later i started again done some trading up etc i'm still a bit behind than i should be ingame atm but i'm happy with my chars corp standing etc in eve.

so i learned teh hard way.

change them often and use letters number special chars upoer and lower case and if you spot anything funny report it straight away.

imagine lossing all your sp and stuff and starting again.

 please don't take out your real life issues out on me not my fault if your fat ugly bullied divorced broke or  have a pimple thats big and red maybe your mom wants you out her basement or a jock has gave you a wedgie your flames only make me laff at your sadness your hidden tears are as juicy as the whiners i blob or the blobs i hide from

Happened to me already, took 4 days to get my characters and stuffs back. I suspect the hacker used a password cracker as my pass was random letters and numbers i punched in to set it.

Probably just used a keylogger as he got my login name too apparently What?

Do I have a problem if I effortlessly type out any one of several 20-character mixed-case alphanumeric passwords with interspersed symbols for my stuff?

If you where to password a document with this simple word thats findable in any dictionary including name dictionaries my passware will find it within a day on the ps3. 16 cores going at it is stupidly fast at 20million passes and hour. I even added a custom dictionary for misspelled words you as the customers I often unlock for do remember the password but forgot how they spelled it.

Now words and things that are illegible let alone inpronouncable takes a very very very long time, espeically when they ascii the damn thing or go 64-128 bit on these things. Which at that point I point them to the boys down the street they got a monsterous number cruncher which is like 128+ cores.

If you're wondering, no Im no hacker just a local uncertified data recovery person's who acutally specializes a bit more on data destruction for local agencies. None of the tools I have would work against most online websites and also my ISP would frown if I tried.

There is a very interesting read from dr. Cromac Herley, a researcher at Microsoft which is titled : "So Long, And No Thanks for the Externalities:
The Rational Rejection of Security Advice by Users" That is particularly interesting in this context.

Here is a excerpt from the paper :

Passwords, and the rules that govern their choice, use
and maintenance, are one of the main points of inter-
action between ordinary users and the security commu-
nity. The habit of users of choosing weak passwords
has caused web-sites to set policies that force minimum
strength rules. Strength rules generally constrain pass-

"[...]Rule 6 will help only if the attacker waits weeks before
exploiting the password. So this ampli es the burden
for little gain. Only if it is changed between the time of
the compromise and the time of the attempted exploit
does Rule 6 help. [...]"

The author offers many compelling arguments to justify the rationale behind the unwillingness of many users to abide by each and all security rules in regard to online transactions.

A password that can not easily be guessed, that is not used for many websites, that no one know but you and, that hasn't been hacked from the server needs not be changed.

nah i ussually writes everything, include CC info in not-encrypted .txt and upload it on torrent and rapidshare.. just in case i need those info when i am not at home.. Big smile

If he logged your user ID he probably logged your password. It's amazing how many people assume that their password was cracked while they refuse to accept that they handed it out. It might not have even been a keylogger, maybe you used the same username/password combo elsewhere, or you wrote it down and someone found it, or you told someone and they told someone else...

There are many ways "hackers" can get your password, but cracking it is not one of them.

Its the same reasoning that the longer you own a house, the more likely it will burn down. So its best to move every 6 years.

Only way a new code will help is if you change it during a known attempt and backtrack over a random set that has already been used. You may even speed your own demise by swapping it to a code that would come up sooner in an algorithm.

You stick with a strong random password and don't reuse it with another program. The end.

Which raises the question again:

When will CCP implement key fobs?

(They were handed out as toys last Fanfest, but not a single peep since then about when we'd be able to purchase or use them.)
