Do it now!

I know there is a ton of you with the same old password that has been around for months, dare I say years?

Just a friendly reminder. Big smile

What makes a new password any better than the old one if only you know what it is?

The longer a password is used, the more likely someone will crack it - especially if a hacker is able to bypass the intended authentication system so they can "test" millions of passwords per second.

My password cracker has been testing my first password for two years still hasnt found it yet. It brute forces about 5 million passwords an hour so... if my second password is a bit more complicated and about three digits longer I wonder how long that will take to solve.

Dust 514's CPM 1 Iron Wolf Saber Eve mail me about Dust 514 issues.

Ok, but what if it found the new one first?

I don't see the benefit as long as you have a proper password and not the name of your pet.

^This

Especially: the attacker might be able to get away with trying to guess the password a dozen times a second through a bot-net trying to connect to EVE Online. The longer you leave the same password in place, the more likely it is that someone will stumble across the appropriate combination of bytes.

Of course changing your password (and, say, using a RSA key fob style two factor authentication) only works if the attacker isn't in control of your computer :)

Worth taking into account when you do change passwords.

Did you know? Every book ever written is in the dictionary! You just have to put the words in the right order.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

My password is a randomized string of several dozen letters, numbers, and symbols. Good luck.

My password is just a simple word. No special numbers, letters, or special characters. I haven't changed it since I started and I never will. There is no reason to change it. You don't know what it is, and you've got a pretty large dictionary to guess through. Good luck.

You can only test millions of passwords per second if the client is willing to accept millions of requests per second and not boot you for hacking. It won't accept, and it will boot, but you can believe what you want I guess.

that'll take about .3 of a second if I actually bothered to try. maybe .4 if I use a particularly large dictionary.

Good luck trying to guess "g1WXNbqKi0gKlkVinLcVU3RRwozxW6ou".

After I read few threads about how long it takes CCP to solve hacked accounts, I installed KeePass Password Safe and started to use completely random passwords, each account/site using different one.

ps. it seems I only used 20-char passwords for my other 2 accounts, time to change them.

Single word passwords are cracked in minutes, BUT, someoone has to have compromised CCP's servers to get access to the hashed password so they can try and crack it...
